It's not the distance that is 'scary'. It's the large number of sharpshooter/snipers. If a war starts an awful lot of leaders from Sgt. to General will be shot dead on the battlefield. So will high value targets like weapons crews. Super long range isn't used that often. Shorter range with large number of sharpshooters are used.
