Subject: What do you carry?
RockyMTNClimber    1/4/2008 6:03:10 PM
Many of the Strategy Page posters are LEO and carry weapons both on and off duty. I am long retired from that game but I have retained my CCW ever since. Normally I carry a loaded weapon, either a snub nose hamerless revolver in a Kramer pocket holster OR (rarely) an G19 in a IWB holster, a heavy folding knife on a pocket clip on the weak side, a cell phone, and that is it. My fashion sense just does not allow me to pack a Bat-Belt rig to go about my daily routines in the field or office. My work takes me all over the state of Colorado and frequently into the beast, downtown Denver. I keep a Surefire in my coat pocket at night and a very complete survival pack that two people can live off for a week in my vehicles. I do not carry spare mags or speedloaders but I have recently spoken to some COP-er friends (both active and retired) who are carrying two guns off duty and multiple magazines. Some are preaching 3 mags in possesion at all times. For those of you who carry, EITHER civilian or off duty LEO, What do you carry and why. For the rest what would you carry out and amongst them if you could. Check Six Rocky

CZ-75 9mm in an inside-the-pants belt holster with my shirt hanging over, no spares, usually a pepper spray in case of a non-lethal confrontation so I don't have to immediately escalate to a deadly weapon.  Since I know that it is ridiculously unlikely I'll ever need it, I actually hope people *can* see that it "prints" through my typical summer T-shirt attire.  I want everyone to know I'm carrying--not because it has anything to do with me, my safety, my junk, etc.--but because it makes a statement about an armed citizenry.  I hope that everyone who's ever thought about doing likewise will see that I am, just in case that will make the difference in their mind and then be sufficiently motivated to carry through on their desire to join the ranks of citizens willing to accept responsibility for the safety of their community.

Let me see.

Keys.  Because I have to be able to get into the house, and start the car.

A phone.  So I can, you know, talk to people who aren't with me.

A wallet.  So I can buy stuff.

And that's all I really need.....

Still working out the niceties of tucking a Mossberg 835 with reloads in my trousers.  "Yeah, I'm just happy to see ya, sweetie."  I could resort to extraordinary means to garner official Chicago/Cook County permission to pack a smaller footprint piece but that just doesn't seem imperative, I have managed to handle disputes with my fists when diplomacy and escape and evasion have failed me thus far.  My only real exposure is when I visit U of C or IIT in business attire anyway, which I would prefer not to soil with blood, teeth and puke, the rest of the troublemaker areas tend to harbor sloppy drunks who don't seem to be able to express their rage properly let alone locate their Benchmades or Gerbers and hold onto them when kicked hard.

Dude.  I wanna party with you and your armory.  On your terms, of course ;>)  Some will say that a real man packs anti-tank and Stinger.  I didn't say it.  Not me.

I'd be inclined to say some men (and I use the term loosely) are compensating for something.

Some men (and women) just plain like to shoot.  I'm among them and I'm glad my nation respects this as an inherent right.  The skills can come in handy on a number of levels.  My BIL somewhat concerns me though, he is a survivalist with a complete underground munitions reload factory.  In the bunker.  Back in rural Michigain...yee frickin haw ;>)  And a great guy to know when it's time to hunt.

Don't you get tired lugging all those around?  I've heard of carry a backup, but a back-back-back-back-back-back-backup?

Off Duty:
Since I get tired of lugging all that crap around all the time, my off duty set up is pretty much like Yimmy. As little as I can get away with.

(1) Wallet containing the following:
A picture of my kids
+DL
+SS card
+CDIB
+TCLEOSE card
+commision card
+Tribal membership card
+Sam's card
+Blockbuster card
+Some coupon card I bought of a neighborhood kid that I completely forgot about till +now (hey .. buy one get one free at IHOP ... woohoo!)
+Library card
+a debit card that expired in 2004
+the replacement for that one, one credit card
+a piece of paper with a phone number on it ... who's I have no idea
+five business cards (which I'm fairly sure two of them aren't even in business anymore)
+$7 US Dollars

And finally, a taped together and barely legible plastic Saint Michael prayer card. I'm not Catholic or superstitious, but a friend of my Mom's gave it to me the day before I left for basic training and told me it would protect me. I have kept it ever since ... ya know, just to play it safe.

(1) Key ring with exactly four keys on it

(1) trusty Swiss army knife

Note: I absolutely HATE cell phones. I refuse to have one.

Thanks Rocky, I have been meaning to clean out my wallet for some time.

And damn Dwight ... don't your arms get tired <rimshot>
