Subject: Best Semi auto Pistol today?
Philippine Soldier    10/30/2003 9:29:00 AM
I love pistol shooting. I currently own and use the best plastic gun in the world, the Glock model 35. I have a calibre 40 S&W and magazine capacity is 15. It is very light, tough and reliable. I would like to hear from other peoples opinion. Which semi auto pistol is available in the market right now that is worth looking at. Is is the Para ordnance, Colt or others.

Give up your Glocks and get a real gun. My vote is H&K P7 9mm or USP 45. Have both, you will never find an easier shooting, better balanced gun than the "squeeze c o c k e r". I've had tuned pistols that were not as smooth and accurate as my P7 was out of the box. Unless you are a very serious marksman it will shoot better than you. Sandbagged 1.5 in groups at 25 yds. Next in line are Sigs then those plastic thinggies and the 1911 clones. Still love my old browning high power, it just don't shoot for crap. But 25 years and a box or 2 of ammo what do you expect. JROTC- Extractor, headspace, spring or cheap low power ammo are the usual culprits for a "stovepipe" Glocks kick because they are so lightweight.

I've never shot the P-7, but I have to admit I've always been curious about them after I saw a New Jersey trooper shoot rings around everyone at a range once. Does the sqeeze c o c k ing take some getting used to? do you use it like a manual safety or just take a fighting grip on the handgun from the very beginning as opposed to sqeezing and releasing it? As far as pistols I'm really familiar with, the SIGs are by far the most accurate out of the box I've ever shot. My P220 will shoot circles around a 1911 that I'm almost emberressed to admit how much I paid for compared to the 220. I was lucky enough to have access to a ransom rest for a short time. That stock P220 firing 230gr hydra shocks put everything into barely over an inch at 25 yds, it only slightly bettered that with 185 gr match, while it kept cheapo hardball inside 2 1/2". I hate knowing that now though, it makes my 3-4 inch 25 yd barricade groups look huge now! The only thing I wish the SIG has, is a slightly better trigger on them. I love a nice crisp short trigger pull. I bet the P-7 is about as close to 1911 or hi-power trigger isnt it? By the way JROTC... alot of times, stovepipes are also caused by limp wristing a 1911.

"limp Wristing" is simnply not having your wrist locked and rigid. The give allows alot of the recoil energy to transfer into breaking the wrist over as opposed to operating the slide. In effect it short strokes the action not allowing the case to be fully ejected. You'll see a good demonstration of limp wristing if you watch a handgun being fired from the side and it recoils in an arc (think excagerated muzzle flip) rather than straight back. Handguns that have a relativly high bore axis such as the 1911 are more prone to it than something with a lower bore axis such as a glock.

Yea i found that the 1911 liked to come up towards my brow but the glcok tried to unlock my frame stance where my arms were placed. A double hand agressive stance . BTW do you point your foot when quick firing on a man sized no rear sights i find it helps a lot

Thanks for making me go to the range to compare the two :) I tighten my grip when coming up from the ready on both. P-7 a little (very little) extra effort. If you have never shot a 7 it takes about 2 mags to get use to the squeeze, then you don't notice it. Yes, it has a nice crisp, light trigger. Suprises me every time it goes off. The USP not as smooth I'm a 3-4 inch 25yd shooter too. Both my HKs can shoot better than me. It gives me room to grow and keeps me from BSing myself and blaming it on the gun. I've shot a 226 and really liked it. Not sure how stock it was. Doing some FTS drills off the fantail of a ship. Another unit sharing the space and thats one of the weapons they were using. They also had HK mark 23s. I shot better with the Sig. Didn't like the Mk23 grips. I saw the price of a civilian Mk23. $1300.00 US. I didn't like it that much. JROTC sounds like you need to choke up on the 1911 grip. Also if the rounds are inpacting to the 8-11 or 2-4 o'clock of where your aiming then you might want to get different sized grips. Wrong grip size will cure a lot of the limpwristing. Everyone wants to use those big "combat" grips.

The best pistol is the one that is practiced with regularly. The guy that brags about his pistol/gun collection but never takes them to the range doesn,t scare me. The guy with the 30 yr old ruger that practices every saturday makes me sweat.

You’ve got it Sam. The best pistol in the world is the one that you are most comfortable with. Look at 9mmP or higher in caliber and try out as many as possible. My vote goes to Glock in 40SW. Best value for money (I don’t know about price in the US) CZ 75. Again that is my personal choice. Get what you feel comfortable with and could trust with your life.

Sam ... "Thanks for making me go to the range to compare the two :)" OK, you've beat me to the range ... I'm having hell finding a range anywhere in north Texas with a rental P-7 ... but I'm not giving up yet! "You’ve got it Sam. The best pistol in the world is the one that you are most comfortable with. Look at 9mmP or higher in caliber and try out as many as possible." I like that attitude. I think far too much is made out of what caliber you should pick this week and who is carrying what down at the local gun shop. I dont feel at a huge disadvantage with a 9mm as opposed to a .40 or a .45. It's not what cartridge you chamber that matters, but how the gun fits you and how you fit the gun. "Again that is my personal choice. Get what you feel comfortable with and could trust with your life" Ya know, I've been refered to as a "gun whore" for my never ending search for the perfect Duty gun. I admit I change fairly often, I have just yet to find what I feel is the perfect sidearm to match my individual needs. It seems no matter what the pistol or situation, you make compromises and trade offs with one gun over another. Being a firearms instructor in a police accademy I always try to keep an open mind and keep up with new designs and their advancements. To name the "best" pistol we really have to say what it will be used for. The differences between military, law enforcement, and civilian uses are all very different. Here goes my best list..... Military = Browning Hi-power Police = Sig P-220/P-226 ( I want to say Smith & Wesson Autos for all their weapon retention benefits ... but I just cant bring myself to do it) Civilian Concealed Carry= Glock 19/23 Backup/Deep Concealed Carry= Smith & Wesson 642 "Onion Field Insurance"= Seecamp 32 ...(although I might change that if I ever get my hands on a Seecamp in .380) There is one kind of piatol I also contantly keep my eye out for. A .22LR that feels and handles just like a full size service sidearm. They never seem to have controls that correlate to their big brothers. That is something I'd love to see the gun makers bring out. I tried a Ciener .22LR 1911 conversion kit .... the only thing it would help with is teaching clearance drills! I just want something that could help obtain and retain skills, without the cost being what it is to go work thru 500 rounds of .45 in an afternoon. Any suggestions on that?

Ruger 22/45 purposely built training gun for 1911. Has same grip angle, controls, etc.
