Subject: What is the best side arm for police?
rayott34    3/14/2008 4:37:09 AM
What are the most common (best?) sidearms that police/customs/border patrol (etc) normally carry and why? What are the standards that are used to sort out the good from the bad? How much does price matter? (and since when and why did CHiP's stop using Harley's and start using ugly European bikes?)

Weapons are procured by each different department, and some departments also allow guys to carry alternate weapons off of an approved list, so that's a complicated question.

If I'm not mistaken, Glock has a very big chunk of the law enforcement market.  Partly that's a reflection on Glock's product, which is robust and easy to learn to use but also has to do with the fact that Glock just about gives their pistols away at cost to LE agencies.

The best handgun for police is the best gun for the particular officer in question. Glocks, Sigs, and H&K's all have great reliability records. It all comes down to preferences in grip, caliber, size, sights (get Big Dots, ho's ), and mag capacity.
Personally, I like Glocks. Im >not< an leo or military, but I'll be using a G19 through Tactical Response's Fighting rifle course in late April. They have a great reliabilitiy record and fit great in my hand.

About the most uniform thing I know about police pistols is that most police I've talked to have had their departments go with the .40 S&W cartridge. The actual gun in question varies widely, though as mentioned Glocks are very common. I don't happen to like them personally since they don't really fit in my hand well.

And apparently with complimentary pistol rental for the course, I see

Probably because the R1150/1200RT-Ps will run circles around a Road King and stop in about a third of the distance. But, I thought they switched from the Kawasaki's ... at least that's what 7-Mary-3 and 4 rode!

I guess that 7-mary-3 was before my time, so I wont comment.  I didn't think that kawasaki ever made big heavy cruiser bikes like the kind that the CHP (California state police) uses; but whenever I see a bunch of police or CHP bikes; the older ones seem to be harly's  and the newer ones are bmw's.  The harly's, while not as loud as some (cause the cops dont trick their bikes out to be really loud I guess); still sound low in pitch like a real motercycle.  The bmw's have a high pitch whine sound that just doesn't sound like a proper moterbike should.
