>>Had a police car run over my Glock 23(.40 Cal but basically the same gun) and it still worked great.<< Bush hog + Glock, however, does not do the pistol any favors. I saw one some alleged perpetrator of something had tossed out the window into a field post-collision and it was quite a bit worse for the encounter. The slide looked solid, and with a new frame it would probably have been fine . . . but the frame looked like it'd been on the losing end of a fight with a pit bull.

Horsesoldier, Although I'm not a huge fan of the Glock design, I was under the inpression that they were as tough as nails and rather difficult to harm. Would any sidearm come through the TC you described better off? Or would the frame be in one piece, but inside the abdominal cavity of the perp? Oh, and I have to ask, in your time as a ________ , did you ever see a person/pet that lost a bout with a PB? Makes my skin crawl thinking about it! Thanks, Cato

Cato, Beware the Glock magazine catch! The magazine would release and fall free sometimes because the magazine catch was damaged. I bought the gun used so go figure. Probably why the A-hole sold it and who knows what he did to it. But it wad damaged none the less. I actually found out about that while firing in self defense! Welcome to the Jungle Cato. A place I'm sure you are familiar with.

>>Although I'm not a huge fan of the Glock design, I was under the inpression that they were as tough as nails and rather difficult to harm. Something of solid metal construction might, though I'm guessing that even then if it was an aluminum framed gun it would have been carved up pretty badly. Any other polymer framed pistol would, I'm guessing, have been just as damaged, possibly more so. The pistol in question was mostly a conversation piece, being one of the only examples I've ever seen (a general consensus, I gather) of a truly and catastrophically broken sort of Glock. (I suspect you could have fired it single shot, but getting a magazine into the mag well was right out.) >>Oh, and I have to ask, in your time as a ________ , did you ever see a person/pet that lost a bout with a PB? Makes my skin crawl thinking about it!<< I've seen some pretty good dog bites a time or two down through the years (none related to military activites/training/etc), but never any pit bull handiwork first hand. I'm pretty okay with that, really . . .

Cato    RE:My favorite 9mm for...HP-35, Browning or FN?   3/8/2006 3:42:29 PM
Are there qualitative differences between the HP from FN in Belgium, and the HPs manufactured by Browning(FN), on this side of the pond? Apparently the Belgian HPs are about to be discontinued in the U.S. Thanks, Cato

A lot of the High Powers sold by Browning were imported FNs, rather than US manufacture, in any case.

The Best 9mm is without a doubt the CZ 75B.  Solid Steel Construction. Inside Rail. Functions perfectly after 1000's of rounds.  Is used by more Special Forces, Police, and Military Units than any other Pistol in the world.

And, it is Very Cheap compared to Sig Sauer, which is the only other that it can be compared to.  The reason why it is so much less expensive is because of the Exchange Rate - Czechoslovakia is an Eastern Eurpoean Nation that is not a part of the Euro Exchange Currency, and is way undervalued.

So Get yourself a CZ and Be Happy

Get Yourself a GREAT GUN at 50% or Less....These are Quality Supreme.

RockyMTNClimber    Glock 19   10/6/2006 12:44:32 PM
As far as 9er mike mike's go. The Glock 19 is the best I have found and is the only 9mm I own. I carry mine in a Kramer inside the belt holster, very comfortable and concealable. I have run 1500 rounds plus of all kinds of ammo through it and it has never jammed or hickuped. I prefer its system to the HP's cocked and locked system. It seems to fit most people's hands, large or small, it is better than average for accuracy in  a out of the box gun, Loaded with +P Gold Dot's or similar ammo it should end a fight right away. My favorite carry gun is a .357 snubby S&W. But I have complete confidence in my G-19.

CZs are really incredible pistols, even before considering the extremely reasonable price.

Glock 19s are about the only model of Glock I have any use for, personally (also like the G36, that's about it), but it's an excellent, no fuss, sort of gun.  If I ever pick up another Glock it'll be a G19.

Interesting thread...
Since the original question included considerations like ergonomics, I'd like to point out some characteristics that might affect somebody's choice and definition of "best". For the record,  my preference is my customized Colt 1991A1 45ACP.
I'm also left-handed - a trait that I share with 10-13% of the world population.

I also have relatively small hands. This means that:
1. The Beretta 92, S&Ws and others with slide-mounted safeties bad for me. I can't even hit the 92's safety with my thumb. This is an instant disqualification.

2. The CZ-75 and varients have an unusually (abnormally?) long trigger reach and trigger pull. I can't get a good finger position and trigger squeeze. Even if it's a great design, I can't shoot it.

3. High capacity 9mms have fat grips.

Also,
3. Although I like Browning's designs and really like the Hi-Power, it has a magazine disconnector, which safes the gun when the magazine is out and impares trigger pull. My friends that carry a Browning have sent them off to install a hammer-down safety which removes that "feature".

4. I also like the Glocks, but the grip-frame angle is unusual and it has an odd backstrap that may throw off your point of aim. It may not shoot where you want without bending your wrist, which increases joint stress and slows your aim.

5. I've shot one H&K P7M8. It was nice - very instinctive and quick, clean lines. You would have to practice extensively with it in order for its ergonomics and method of operation to become instinctive. It's an example of a design that I would want to use exclusively- and not try to switch between it and another pistol.

6. I've shot one H&K USP 45ACP. The USP seems to be a good all-around design. It's pretty big for a 9mm, though.  On the plus side, the USP can be made left-handed friendly.

7. I don't have any recent experience with the SIGs. I haven't heard much complaining, though.

Am I picky? yeah... But deciding what's "best" means that each person weighs the pros and cons and makes their own decision. Would I bitch if somebody threw me any of these and told me to get busy? Naw...

Cheers!
Dave
