>>I was at the range the other day with a friend of mine and he let me shoot his Steyr M-A1, and I've got to say it was the most comfortable handgun Ive ever fired. There was almost no muzzle jump whatsoever and the grip is the best positioned in relation to the barrel out of all the handguns I've handled (which isnt many but still). << And very competitively priced. I've narrowly talked myself out of picking one up on a number of occasions . . .

Trust me, shoot it a couple of times and you'll be willing to pay twice the asking price, especially considering the fact that my friend told me that he fired the .357 SIG version of the gun and it was just as comfortable and easy to handle.

Best 9mm? Boy - what a can of worms. It's like asking what's the best full-sized pickup truck? What's the best Playboy Playmate ever? It all depends on what the criteria is. If it's just sheer accuracy, it's hard to top either a modern Sig Sauer or the more venerable Browning Hi-Power. If it's rugged durability, Glock is tops If it's ease of maintenance and overall cheapness (for mass production and distribution to troops) then the Beretta and CZ-75 win high marks. If the criteria is just for what one person should own, if price were no object, a SIG 210 is hard to beat. Just a fine, fine weapon. However, it should be noted that virtually all current-market 9mm handguns today are reliable, easy to field strip, reasonably accurate, and well balanced. The "best" is totally subjective to each shooter. My own personal fave is my CZ-75b. Completely reliable, accurate as an atomic clock, and with it's heft, very very comfortable to shoot.

Have you tried out the Sig P-226? Excellent review here: http://remtek.com/arms/sig/model/226/226.htm Price looks a little steep at $585.73 though.

>>Have you tried out the Sig P-226? Excellent review here: http://remtek.com/arms/sig/model/226/226.htm<< Sig P226 (and their line more generally) has an excellent reputation, though I've not had occasion to fire one personally. >>Price looks a little steep at $585.73 though.<< That's not too bad, really -- more than one would pay for the Glock or Springfield XD, perhaps (and some other low-price but good quality weapons like the Steyrs previously mentioned), but cheaper than HK pistols or premium M1911s like Kimber . . .

I believe when the military was making the move to a 9mm, the two finalists were the Beretta 92F, and the Sig-Sauer 226. It seems to me like the Sig is generally considered superior (anecdotal evidence) and the Beretta won by being the "lowest bidder."

The US military does use the Sig P228 in limited numbers, under the designation "M11." If memory serves me correctly, it is used primarily in concealed carry sort of capacities, like plainclothes CID or counter-intel agents.

That's interesting. I didn't know the P228 was actually issued. I imagine that certain MP units might allow their soldiers a certain degree of leeway in personal weapons (like civilian cop agencies) as long as they meet a certain set of requirements. However, I seem to recall that in "Black Hawk Down" the Delta boys, when needing a concealed piece, went with the CZ-75, instead of their usual 1911's, which of course are a lot bulkier.

The book talks about how the Delta operators were annoyed about having to get high and tights and otherwise look like the Rangers for opsec purposes during the deployment. The CZ75 is, I'm guessing, another Hollywood invention.

Most Civillian Police agencys Have strict rules on only carrying Department issued firearms. They also do not let you modify firearms. The reason being Lawyers,Lawsuits, and Insurance.Lawyers can easily portray you as a Gun Nut if you carry or modify something not standard to the Department. Also you must have Departmental Training on any Item used as a Weapon Baton,Mace,Flash light etc. This is all due to the Lawyers who Protect the civil rights of Americas Criminals.
