I'm British and I'm gonna try for the British Army when I'm 17 I'm not interested in Infantry only, but how much action will someone in the Royal Artillery as a Gunner Light Gun see? and if you know what are the promotion prospects?

I imagine promotion will be faster and easier than infantry, but I don't know how rank works in the gun crews.
What do you mean by "action"? I mean, you will see a lot of fireing big guns. With the light gun you will find yourself supporting light forces such as para's and marines on operations. You will be in the war zone obviously on operations, and you will train in basic infantry skills, but you won't get used for fighting patrols etc unless there is no other choice. You get girls in the artillery, it is not considerd a front line combat role.

what do you think?, would you consider it "frontline"?
what about say a Gunner Special Observer?, they are deployed behind enemy lines and have to sit in holes etc directing attacks and they are taught escape and evasion. What would you say about them?(i'm a military noob, I joined Strat Page to learn more)
Also if an RA serviceperson passes the All Arms Commando Course ran by the Royal Marines and is assigned to 29 Commando Brigade is:

Not considered a combat role?
if you know, what is the selection and training for them other than whats stated there(i.e Male only.2-4 years service etc)

Personally I think the fire director stuff is quite cool, with naval gunfire director being the pinacle I guess, but I don't know much about it.
I don't consider artillery to be front line combat, but then I don't like the artillery ever since I was 17 and some stuck up corporal (woops, 'bombardier'), gave me a bollocking for calling him a corporal. Thats one of my favorite grudges that is.

I can't speak for the British Army, but artillery is considered a combat arms MOS (military occupational specialty) in the United States Army and Marine Corps. As such, that means women soldiers are not allowed to serve as members of artillery crews. From what I understand however, in Iraq history is repeating itself in the regard that artillerymen, due to the lack of artillery missions, have been serving on patrols and convoys as regular infantry. Your chances of action in this role are obviously pretty high depending where you are stationed. I don't know if Brit artillery troopers have had to serve in this role or not.
