What is the World's "best" all around assault rifle? I would nominate the AK-47 based on the following criteria: Reliability Durability Affordability

Some examples: Sub-Machine Guns: MP5 (9mm),Uzi (9mm),Ingram (.45), Sten (9mm), Sterling, Thompson (.45). (Pistol Ammunition) Light Machine Guns: Minimi (5.56mm), LSW (5.56mm), BAR (.303), Bren (.303), Lewis (.303) Medium Machine Guns/General Perpous: Vickers (.303) , Browning .303 (.303), PKM (7.62mm), MG34 (7.92mm) , MG42 (7.92mm) , M60 (7.62mm), GPMG (7.62mm), M240 (7.62mm). *(rifles/assault rifles fire the same ammo as light/medium machine guns) Heavy Machine Guns: M2 Browning .50, DShK .50 (bullets half an inch wide but six inches in length) * GPMGs like the MG42,M60 and M240 have similar power to medium machine guns but are lighter to carry and more portable. * Some May argue that some GPMG's and Medium MG's like M60's and MG42's are Heavy MG's, however they do not possess the power of .50 calibre HMG's. Assault Rifles: M16 (5.56mm), SA80 (5.56mm), AK47 (7.62mm), AK74 (5.45mm),Galil AR (7.62mm). *In order for a rifle to be classed an 'assault rifle' it must have a fully automatic capability. *Assault rifles with an extended barrel and bipod can be classed as light machine guns; For example the British 'LSW' LMG is exactly the same weapon as the SA80 assault rifle but with an extended barrel and bipod. Rifles(semi-auto matic): SLR (7.62mm), M1 (.303) Rifles (bolt-action): Lee-enfieds....Springfilds (.303) *Not sure how many weapon beginers are hear but a 9mm round is smaller than 7.62mm. The length of rifle and LMG/MMG rounds are alot longer than pistol ammo (9mm) but not as wide so as to increase range and accuracy. *HMG have the longest and widest bullets bullets but are still by far the most powerful solid bullet firing weapons (apart from some .50 sniper rifles but thats another story). Confusing........

The AK-47 of course, and my wife's mouth, Reliable, durable, not affordable though.

Anyone heard of 762 RK 95? http://guns.connect.fi/gow/M95.html Mayby the best AK-clone. Better sights, better craftmanship, little bit of reliablity while very dirty changed to much increased accuracy.

Yes, the M1 was in .30-06 not .303.

I think the machine gun jigglies from the second Austin Powers wins hands down. Nothing can top lulling the enemy into complacency and then letting them rip!

Can the SOCOM M249 be considered for this thread? I am referring to the one used by SOCOM forces which has a short barrel, a red-dot scope, flashlight, and forehand grip.

GOP, That's also in FORSCOM units as well. I'd say no because that weapon's role is as an automatic weapon, not as a machine gun. That's a US Army distinction (AR vs. LMG).

I did not know that FORSCOM had any, I thought it was Specops only. Well, I don't think the AK can still be considered the Worlds best machine gun. It is not much more reliable than the G36, but lacks in accuracy and it weighs too much.
