Subject: need explnation for Military Jargon terms
filip_loka    4/3/2003 1:40:14 PM
Greets, I'm translating a computer game from English into Polish, and since I'm no big expert in military jargon, I would appreciate if somebody could explain the precise meaning of these espressions to me. I have my ideas as to the meaning, but I need to be sure. Thanks in advance! "coming in hot" (a helicopter); "strafing run/pass" (also w/r to a helicopter); "a technical" - I think it's an armed vehicle, right?; "exfil" (as in "The convoy will circle until it's safe to exfil") - need a precise meaning here, because I'm pretty sure I'll have to invent something appropriate in Polish. That's it, I guess. Thanks a lot for your help! Filip

Filip: A strafing run is when an aircraft or helicopter makes a pass over an enemy formation, and fires its machine guns. A technical is a non-armored vehicle, such as a pick-up truck, that has a weapon mounted on it (machine gun, recoilless rifle). Exfil means to exfiltrate, or get out of, an area. I expect that "coming in hot" means that the helicopters guns are armed and ready to fire. Hope this helps.

It helps a lot! Thanks! I thought so, now I *know* :) I have another one, perhaps you (or anybody) will know as well: "Weapons Free" (which I believe is a command). What does it do/command to do? Thanks, Filip

The term "strafing" originates in WWI, where German civilians greeted on another with: "Gott strafe England". The British used the term for an artillery attack: "Now he is strafing us again." Weapons Hold: Don't shoot, unless shot at. Weapons Tight: Shoot at positively identified hostile targets (i.e. don't fire at unknown) Weapon Free: Shoot at anything not positively identified as freindly.

I think exfil means exfiltrate, which is an other word for getting the hell out.
