Subject: Factfinders initial insults
Black Hornet    11/25/2010 2:43:23 PM
MFP thread... Oh dear, isn't it fascinating that the 'Sealion was possible' lobby always seem to think that, in order to combat the 60 or so RN destroyers and cruisers based between Plymouth & Harwich, all you need to do is bolt a few 88mm or 105mm guns onto the deck of a barge or coaster, and then blow them out of the water! I can only assume that this is some sort of wish-fulfilment fantasy, wholly divorced from reality Just so that the other posters such as Alf etc can be clear on who is the instigator.

He then follows up in the England to Iceland thread...

I am new to this site, and my first message was directed to Black Hornet, because I think he has also been on another site, called Historum I think, where his strange ideas about Operation Sealion took a real hammering from someone called Doveton.

As the more his views were discredited the more personally abusive he got, and as the same thing seems to have happened on this site, I wanted to check him out so that I would have some idea of what I would be dealing with if I started to contribute regularly.

And currently he has supplied a new derogatory name for myself in another thread. A clear pattern straight through of abusive behavior.

I did post this in response...

Factfinder, if you are concerned about abuse & personal attack, it's best not to issue them as you did above.

As to Sea Lion, Doveton It's an entirely different thread & has no place here & again, if you are not a fan of abuse & insults, please refrain from issuing them as you did above is the correct form.

To no avail as we have seen.

The first coment isn't an insult, its a statement of reality. You couldnt put guns on the deck of a barge or coaster and blow the navy out of the water. It not an insult, its a simple fact.

As to the second comment, if I have read it rightly, Factfinder didnt make up a new derogatory name for you, he simply repeasted a name you have become known by following your destruction by this Doveton Sturdee character on the othwer site.

An anyway, I seem to recall that you changed Factfinders name to Factblunderer in one of your comments, so pots shouldnt call kettles black should they?

Having read your comments and Factfinders comments, I know who I believe is right on this subject, and sorry it isnt you. By the way trhis isnt an insult eitrher, its a statement.

Factfinder    Alleged Insults   11/26/2010 3:17:54 PM
Thanks for your comments Alf. I assume you have read the site I referred to earlier.

Frankly I am at a loss as to how Black Hornet can possibly interpret my comments as insults of a personal nature. The first one, about the 'Sealion is possible' crowd, is a simple statement of a view generally held by serious historians of the period. In order to make an invasion possible in the absence of a German surface fleet, the pro-Sealion come up with such ideas. Apparently, you can mount heavy guns on barges or coasters and sink purpose-built warships with ease. Sorry, but you can't!

The comment about the Historum site was my own personal interpretation of the way the argument went, and I have yet to hear from anyone who thinks differently. At the time, I didn't know who Doveton Sturdee was, although I recently met him when he gave a lecture about carrier aviation which I attended. It turns out that I have read several of his published works on naval history, and were I to state his name you would, I am sure, recognise it at once. I did, however, promise him that I would protect his identity.

It was Doveton Sturdee who told me of the fact that Black Hornet had become a minor celebrity at his university. After a post-graduate student mentioned a few of his comments to Doveton, Doveton decided to log on to the site to correct some of Black Hornets more spectacularly nonsensical statements. When Black Hornet responded by becoming more and more personally insulting and outrageous, the nickname Baldrick was given to him by Doveton's students.  I had nothing to do with it, I simply passed it on, although I must confess that it does seem singularly appropriate!  I think what clinched it was when Black Hornet started remarking about how uneducated Doveton was, when I happen to know that, like me, he has a first class Honours degree in Modern History and (unlike me) Doctorates from several universities. He also lectures regularly at Staff Colleges.

Can Black Hornet say the same, I wonder?

Finally, I note that this site has several hundred views against its name. I wonder if anyone else has any views on it?
