I think we did very well considering that what we did accomplish would probably have been considered all but impossible in the nineties.

I know it is a popular sport now to second guess Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld but I don't believe anyone else could have pulled off even what went right. I don't know of any US war of which it could be said in hindsight that it couldn't have been done with less expense in blood and less expense in treasure.

As for spending money we don't have, that applies more to Obama's "stimulus" since Iraq was at least partially successful and Obama's stimulus had nothing at all good to show for all the debt it saddled us with.

===============================================================================
Getting Al Qaida's attention away from the US as a reason to invade Iraq (who was no threat to the US or its allies)?
This isn't about second guessing - Brent Snowcroft, G H W Bush, James Baker III, all the former living POTUS, all the living Sec State, All the former Nat Sec Advisors, all the former CENTCOM commanders, let alone virtually the entire diplomatic corp were AGAINST invading Iraq - as were all 16 of our national security agencies.

After $1 Trillion spent, with $2T more to go, while we put Iran into the power brokers seat, caused the largest diplomatic and national security disaster in US history, destabilizing the entire region, while as an added bonus recruiting many new recruits and sources of funding for terrorists and the Taliban - let alone the Chinese ending up with all the big oil deals points to an unmitigated disaster that was entirely avoidable.

And w/r/t the stimulus - virtually every reputable economist on the planet says it prevented the complete economic meltdown of the western world - let alone the US - that the republicans caused in only 8 short years - after inheriting an $800B annual surplus.   The NIE considers the Bush Administration's GWOT to be a staggering victory - for those who wish the US ill - something the USSR could not accomplish in 60 years was accomplished by the Administration of George W Bush.

Unfortunately.
