Moqtada al-Sadr is often considered anti American and anti Iranian, but the media often misses one important fact. His family was rival to another prominent Shiite family, Hakim. They worked together in the past, but at some point they became opponents. Why is that important ? Hakim family are founders of SCIRI (Supreme Council of Islamic Revolution in Iraq) and Badr. SCIRI is a political party founded in Iran during Saddam rule and with Iranian blessing. Badr was military wing of that party. So, Hakim's got Iranian blessing, and Sadr's did not. During American occupation, Hakims were favored again. Perhaps because the American main contact in Iraq, back in 2003, was man named Ahmed Chalabi, and he was close to Hakim family. In those days, members of Badr militia got most important police and military jobs in emerging state of Iraq. That made Iraq war a lot harder than it was supposed to be, because Badr members were cops by day and butchers and murderers by night. So Sadr's beef with America and Iran, probably, was result of his rivalry with Hakim family rather than firm political position. However, today things seem to be quite different. Badr became most prominent pro-Iranian militia in Iraq. SCIRI party changed name into ISCI (Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq). It is now lead by someone who is not of hakim family. Ammar al-Hakim left the party and founded another one (National Wisdom Movement). He might even become Sadr's new coalition partner. The alliances on Iraqi political scene have been completely reshuffled lately, and everyone seems to have reinvented himself. Keeping that in mind, it is very hard to tell what would be Sadr's future attitude towards America and Iran. However, Iran already took an initiative and expressed hostility towards Sadr. Also, Iranian General Soleimani is, allegedly in Iraq, trying to forge a post election pro-Iranian political block. That initiative seems to made very bad impression on large share of Iraqi politicians and voters.
