Subject: What if Palestineans march en-mass to Gaza/Israeli border next?
reefdiver    1/31/2008 12:16:49 PM
What will be the Israeli response if Hamas follows through with its threat to do to the Gaza/Israeli border as they did to the Gaza/Egypt border? Suppose Hamas gets even 10,000 "civilians" to simultaneously march on the border.

Riot control. water cannons, arrests, a few shootings, and a lot of propaganda. I dont see residents of Sderot selling cheap TV's. DVDs and cigarettes to the Palestinians. They could march on to the border, but there is nowhere to go from there.

How about exploding a 200 foot wide, 100 foot deep "excavation" or quarry trench from pre-emplaced charges, then pouring in the waters of the Mediterranean? Or importing some of those remaining 30 foot long Nile River Crocs? Or leaving the trench dry, perhaps lining the top of the Israeli side with razor wire or stakes like they do at zoos to keep the animals from escaping? It would be a nice test for those bunker busting bombs.

swhitebull - another idea would be to use those microwave crowd control devices - on max.

Interesting point. The reason for the Gaza success was not support for Hamas, but simply the desire to buy goods. Hamas would likely not be able to gain as much support for a march on the Israeli border. Perhaps Hamas got a bit overconfident with their announcement of a future march on Israeli borders.  However, even a few thousand dedicated people sent to the Israeli border would cause problems.  If the Israeli's kill a bunch of them, it will likely be shown on worldwide networks and be propaganda for Palestineans.  I believe even 5000 people marching on a single crossing would end up being a political nightmare for Israel.  I wonder how many people you can discourage with water, sound weapons, or even an ADS.

Just say what a good idea guys and ship a lot of dvd players, bicycles, goods, etc *3) to a place just inside the Palestinian border and sell them there in a market place. To denie the Palestinians any propaganda value make sure that the prices of the goods are kept artificially low *1) and make a film of it *2).

*1) The price you pay for this inefficiency would be made up by propaganda value.
*2) To send to lazy journalists who are desperate and facing a deadline on a slow news day. Prepeare the material in advance so the journalist has to do as little as possible.
*3) Any stuf that cannot be reasonably made into a bomb.

The reason the Palestinians don't this could very well be that in their views doing business with a Jews is to put it mildly "disgusting".

It's not a pretty sight to behold the result of decades of extremist indoctrination.

And  people are irrational and think there is something sacred about "protesting" no matter what it's goal or who it hurts. It
would be a political problem.

Exactly. And the defense forces of the Jewish State are bound to the avoidance of bloodshed by the very core of Jewish ethics.
The enemy knows it, and plays it like it was a music instrument.
Hama"s explicit plant is to pull the same trick on the Erez crossing as it did with the Egyptians at Rafah two weeks ago.
Whatever Israel does to stop this invasion is certain to whip the usual war crimes chorus into a frenzy, and to hand the Jihadis yet another propaganda victory.
One way to play this game would be to attempt deterrence. Running footage of IDF helos and APC's firing the M-134 Gatling gun on massed cardboard targets while huge Merkava tanks are playing the bass section with airburst and cannister shells, on Arabic-language channels and websites for a week or two, could get the message across. Most of the Gazans would get the impression that the Jews aren't that soft after all, and, contrarily to the Egyptians, have no kinship obligations towards them, and would find excuses not to attend. Even Hama"s can't march them into Erez at gunpoint.
If the event turn out to be a flop with fewer than 1x104 showing up, it can be dealt by whatever non-lethal means the Border Police and the IDF have in their possession, although gunmen and meatbombers mixed in the crowd will have to be picked off by snipers, and this is going to look bad on CNN, but whatever Israel does to defends itself is usually presented this way. If some rioters-gunmen-invaders do get through, they can be let in for some distance into this mostly agricultural area, and then swiftly terminated by airborne teams where the international camera crews aren't looking.
