Subject: Seeking Experts on October (1973) War
ipser    11/20/2008 5:00:54 PM
One of the modules that I'm developing for "How to Make War" is the October War (Syria and Egypt vs. Israel, 1973). While I have read many books on the subject, I still have many questions about the armed forces, terrain, tactics, etc. For example: 1) What is the nature of the desert terrain east of the Suez? Is it sandy or firm? Is it hilly or flat? 2) I found some Soviet maps of the areas but they are dated in the 1980s often disagree with the maps printed in books. The maps in books are less detailed but are from the period. 3) The books are somewhat confusing on the subject of Arab infantry tactics. In some cases they claim that tank mgs were used to suppress Saggers but that seems hard to believe given the relative ranges. I suspect they may be confusing Saggers and RPGs. 4) Why was Syrian infantry so ineffective compared to the Egyptians?

I don't know about the Syrian infantry. They don't seem to have played much part in the Golan battle which looking back is suprising. However the Israeli armor was extensively trained in campaigning in the Golan and had a high emphasis on marksmanship, and on seeing the enemy first. Also Israeli armor could hull-down which is important in broken terrain.
