AIM-9X in LOAL mode demonstrated in a test simulating firing from a submarine at periscope depth. Pretty interesting.

Thats pretty cool, but the concept has been around for a while, the UK messed around with it very briefly, I think using the blowpipe SAM.

Oh definitely. The US was supposed to be working on a periscope-mounted Stinger system at one point also. What's nice about this is that it would potentially allow the submarine to fire its missile from under the surface, without a need to raise a periscope and get a lockon before firing. The big thing for me here is mostly that it finally confirms one way or the other whether AIM-9X has a LOAL mode.
