Naah, it sucks compared to his earlier works. He spends ages and ages building up the tension, and then the allies win the war in about 5 minutes. Realistic? maybe, but as a novel it sucks.

I read the book years ago but Clancy neglects an ancient chinese strategy that is already taking place in Russia...hundreds of Chinese moving across the border, living in Russia, still loyal to China. The triads have a pretty heavy presence there as well. Having a large expat population embedded in your intended target makes invasion simpler. An invasion like that would bring ruin as the Russians have no qualms about nuking their own territory as they had no problem burning their own cities and farms during WWII. The Chinese will be unwilling to take such a large gamble in the near future.

I personally enjoyed the book quite a bit. There are several elements I do not necesarilly find to be historically accurate. The end scene featuring an Aegis cruiser shooting down an incoming ballistic missile during its terminal phase was a bit outlandish. A, the Aegis does not have the capacity to intercept ballistic missiles with any degree of accuracy. B, the terminal phase of a ballistic missiles flight presents the (arguably) greatest MD challenge, weighed against the Boost Phase. Even the future, planned upgrades to the Aegis system to enable it to shootdown an incoming BM require your target be in the Midcourse Phase.

Great start and body but the end was a let down. Superior technology wins the day because everything works perfectly and the battle ends in 1/6 of the book. The ending battle read like an arms dealers sales pitch because nothing went wrong. Nope, didn't like it.

Clancy is always biased towards the U.S. He didn't give any credit to the capabilites of China, and always portrays the U.S. as being invincible ( read the battles between the USAF and PLAAF) The U.S. are good, but not invincible and no way are the Chinese that stupid.

I haven't read many Tom Clancy books, but I've played most of the Tom Clancy games: Rainbow6, RavenShield, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell... Luckily for me, two new ones are coming out this month. Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow comes out for Xbox around 3/23 and I don't think Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm (PS2) has been officially announced, but it should be out this month. Exciting!

It was pretty balanced to a point. PLA/PLAAF capabilities were rather underplayed, on the other hand China will not be able to take on both Russia and US, short of a nuclear strike at the same time.

Oh and more thing. Don't forget about the Smersh system. Earlier version of it, GRAD system proved to be undoing of PRC Siberian plans in 1954.

You lost me. I always thought Smersh (Shmiert Spionam- "Death to Spies") was an NKVD op vs. Western intelligence agencies under Beria & Stalin. Was there more than one sort of program with that appellation- or have I just been reading too many old Ian Fleming novels?.
