A Virtual War

What if governments decide to use a virtual reality system for war conflicts, that way they won't destroy cities and kill innocent people. Or blow up their own world. They can only kill their enemies in the system. What do you think?

Does not sound very satisfiing to me?

If it fails to have some sort of scorring system where the bad guy would die if he lost, there would be no point? On the other hand blowing up the bad guys IS VERY good for the ego and personal satisfaction! If you doubt this go on Y-Tube some time and see some of the "Terrorist killed" videos! One of my favorites is the vid of the F-16 dropping a 500 pounder on a house they got fire from! Or the 16 terrorists in a croud on the street and the one with three scumbags on a roof that show up very well on the FLIR! The voice over on the second pass says it all!

Only a good idea as long as you are the only one that knows the cheat codes.

It's susceptible to tragedy of the commons, just like every other "let's do away with war" idea. How do you stop the other guys from building a dozen ICBMs in secret, or keeping an armored division stashed away just in case they lose on the virtual battlefield and decide to trump it by going to real-life war? This ends up with everyone not only bearing the expense of maintaining conventional armies
in addition to
the virtual reality military, nullifying the peacetime incentive.

What if it's under a world government run by two super computers, the emperor and emperess, and they only allow conflict in the virtual reality system. It's true in real that not all the governments will agree to this solution. Everybody wants a real war.

Only adults are allow in this, because they can get killed. Unless the child is a killing machine.
