The effect this poem has had on me since I first read/heard it in childhood is hard to describe.  It is moving and powerful, but also metrically labyrinthine, with a potent kind of syncopation which somehow melds with the mood and words.  So there is a kind of reaching or stretching to track its "motion". 

A masterpiece.
