Subject: Fears of new conflict in Macedonia

Peace deal demo fuels fear of new conflict in Macedonia By Harry de Quetteville, Balkans Correspondent (Filed: 28/07/2004) Macedonia faced the prospect of renewed civil conflict yesterday after a huge demonstration in the capital Skopje against a peace deal which gives greater rights to ethnic Albanians. Thousands of ethnic Macedonians marched through pouring rain on Monday, protesting against the deal which they say will partition Macedonia on ethnic lines and could lead to the break-up of the country. The deal, currently before parliament, is due to implement the terms of a ceasefire which ended fighting between government forces and minority ethnic Albanians in 2001. It will give virtual autonomy to Albanians in the north and west of the country, which many ethnic Macedonians fear will allow them to secede and join a greater Albania. Now that Slobodan Milosevic's dreams of a greater Serbia have faded, Albanian aspirations to incorporate their ethnic diaspora in neighbouring countries are among the thorniest problems looming over the Balkans. Apart from Macedonia, ethnic Albanians make up the majority population in Kosovo, the statelet on its northern border that is still officially part of Serbia but is in effect run by the United Nations. Monday's march capped a week that left little doubt that fresh violence could erupt in Macedonia. In the western city of Struga last week, 30 people were injured and Vlado Buckovski, Macedonia's defence minister, was forced to retreat as protesters threw stones and Molotov tails. telegraph.co.uk

I am hoping that the Macedonian politicians take a stand for what their people want and quit letting the Albanians push their neighbors around. It is high time someone puts a stop to their mission for a "Greater Albania" Macedonia doesn't owe them anything more then they have already done, and as you said not only will it allow the new autonomous area to join ALbania, it would also take many Macedonians that live their away against their will. This should be stopped and the ARM should protect it's citizens on the border from the high amount of violence that happens there. I would rather see a conflict then a greater Albania, they are the primary reason for the problems facing the Balkans, and the Balkan states should stand up for once.

Hmmm, weren't the Balkans supposedly the high point of the Clinton administration's foreign policy? It seems that Komaraden Madeline Not-so-bright was claiming that not so long ago...

Looking at what Macedonia has become one of the few highpoints is their units fighting in Iraq. The rest of Macedonian history is bogged down by bigger nations standing over them and not letting Macedonia rise up to become a true nation and power in the Balkans.

First of all there is no Macedonian ethnic group. The people who live in that place are Slavs that came to the aria when the Vizantin Empire was on charge. Macedonians was and always be Greeks. The reason that they teach you that you come from ancient Macedonians is because you have no real ancient history. Sorry for that but it is true. Apart of that you must be very careful because Albanians want to take over your country. I propose you to unite with Greece.

so you base the fact that an ethnic group needs "ancient history" to be one? Your sadly mistaken, as i can name several groups that have changed their ethnic names due to the nation they move to. Plus though they are slavic it is easier to distinguish by splitting them up based on nation since it is easy to understand the problems in Yugoslavia if you break it up that way instead. If you were to say the slavics were fighting the albanians it would make it sound like a two sided war, which is wrong. Plus what right does Greece have to say that Macedonia should be annexed by them? Greece is just warmongering and trying to gain territory that Greece hasn't owned. Greece seems to forget that there was no ancient nation called Greece, but just a bunch of nations right by each other that were all at each others throat until someone stronger came along. And why would you really try to destroy the only success story of the Yugoslavian breakup and the home of Mother Teresa?
