Subject: The powder-keg that is the Balkans.....

I have a feeling in the not to distant future this area will find itself pulnged into war yet again. Despite the brutal conflict in Bosnia their is still allot of anger and hatred in the populace. There seems to be a fair share of of whaco groups still running around living the bandit lifestyle. Add into the mix several leaders thirsting for power with generations of ethnic hatred and it creates a healthy enviorment for war to flourish.

Your right about the ethnic hated still pervasice in the region however the last dictator was Milosevic so it won't be as easy for a single perszon to take the decision to invede another countey. However that is not to say that it wont happen.the main problem with the Balkans is the number large ethnic minorities living in different states eg the kosovar albanians, this is definitely a potential issue for teh future and only when such isssues are sorted out in full will there be pece in the region. I mean this has been going on for thousands of years and no huge international effort has been made to fix it so more than likely it will happen again.

There could be another conflict if Kosovo declares independence. Montenegro is also moving towards independence from Serbia which could create an entire new set of problems. However, I support Montenegro's right of self-determination. There is also the issue of ethnic Albanian terrorism in Macedonia.

I think the Balkans have gone down in strategic importance of late. A regional war there is not unlikly however I think it will be easily contained. In the past it's danger stemed from it's nearness to important traffic routes and the fact that it was a point of interface between great powers. The later factor is gone, and the former is less important because Constantinople is firmly under the control of a reliativly stable power.
