Subject: UK SSN Cancellations
streaky bacon    2/13/2008 4:42:25 AM
There is a possibility that the next batch of 3 Astute class SSNs wil1 be cancelled in order to save money! If so, What would be the mostly like alternative plans left for the Royal Navy? With the last T class SSN to be decommisioned in 2022 that would leave the Uk with only 4 active SSN - surely too little! Would it be logical for the UK to buy an extra 2 SSBN but fit them out as SSN with Tomahawk in place of the Trident!!!!Likely or Not??????

The Earth is becoming MORE, not less dangerous. What is going on in Whitehall? You might want to consider a no-confidence measure in Parliament.

rumour mill again, this kind of rhetoric pops up every few months with relation to one or more defence projects.

Some of us are trying Herald (see UKNDA.org), problem is that most people assume the peace and prosperity we enjoy now wont have to ever be earned again.

I think the test for us to have to have enough steel in the water to meet our NATO  commitements and to put together something approaching like a CVBG that will scare off any tin pot regimes. 6 T45s and 4 SSNs isnt enough for this, 8 of each is barely enough but presently seems to be the best case scenerio.

Indeed the MOD is perplexing.  If they do not spend the money now, they will spend more later...

Only later, the cost will be in servicemen's lives.

If the UK government don't commit to a new boat every 22 months and a new design every 88 months the design and build capability will suffer. It would be a false economy unless we resigned ourselves to buying SSN and SSBN off the self from then on. It is cheaper to keep building slowly than to stop and try to start again later. Must we re-learn the lessons taught through leaving it so long before starting the Astute programme?

I'm not sure if the drumbeat of a boat every 22 months allows enough time for a batch 2 of four improved Astutes before Vanguards need replacing. The MoD official line is that the eigth boat order depends on affordability (price and budget). Classes of four seem expensive, but this is a minimum level for the production line. If the design stays the same for boats 5-7/8 then design capabilty will suffer and the Vanguard replacement design will cost more.
