Taiwan might be entering a dangerous period again. China was hoping to strangle Taiwan's economy by competing it with cheap and high quality products. Those were main Taiwanese export assets for years. That could have motivated Taiwanese to merge with mainland voluntarily. However, growth rate of Chinese economy has slowed down, while Taiwan moved to more sophisticated high end products. First Androids were running on HTC hardware, after all. I am afraid it might put the military option back on the table. On the other hand, invading Taiwan would, very likely, make it worthless. There are no natural resources on Taiwan. Industry and skilled and motivated people are the only value. War could easily destroy both, reducing Taiwan to small patch of land with little value. Killing fellow Chinese might make China look bad in the eyes of their own citizens, a well.

Things are indeed getting more dangerous for Taiwan: "China's leaders are giving up on political hopes of reunification — and considering military options." http://foreignpolicy.com/2018/05/22/beijings-threats-against-taiwan-are-deadly-serious/ But according to: http://www.hisutton.com/Taiwanese_midget_sub.html Taiwan may be better off with a larger force of minisubs: "More recently in 2014 the HARD ROC 2.0 report by the US Strategic and Budget Assessment Center recommended that Taiwan instead concentrate on building a large fleet of some 42 midget submarines."
