Anyhoo, I just read this disturbing atime piece. What's really going on? Is there any hope that the secular camp could prevail? Is the AKP really irreversibly Saudified?

Turkey wants in on the EU, that is currently been blocked for various reasons though it could happen at some point with very slim chances, if a "revolution" where to take place in Turkey can forever forget plans of joining the EU. If such a "revolution" goes to the utter extreme, like Iran's 1979 one, then there could be serious economic and political consequences.

It depends on what you mean by revolution. If you mean that Turkey goes all out Islamist, that won't happen; the Army will step in and squelch it. There are a couple of reasons why the army are holding back at the moment.

Firstly, the EU would be unhappy with a military takeover, even though it would be temporary.

Secondly, the AKP, though it has an Islamist agenda, is being careful to try to make gradual changes.

What you must realise is that the secular state was Ataturks great achievement and that the army is tasked with ensuring that it remains a secular state. In Turkey, Ataturk is revered as almost a demigod; I have never entered a building, private home, shop or office that did not have a picture of him on the wall. Mention his name and the response is reverent. If it got to the point where the army felt it had to step in, the majority of Turks would support them.

As someone with a vested interest in Turkish stability, ( a $200,000 investment) I would support the army too.

By the way, I am English.

AKP is conservative...it's more pro-American than any secular party in Turkey. They're  extremely liberal and thats why they get so much support from America and Europe...because when they rule this country Euro/Americans can easily conquer our market, companies...etc
Army on the other haqnd would prefer a more national economy....a country that can stand on it's own. Thats also what I want.
So do not be sad if AKP goes on because they're on your side :D

In fact there are conspiracy theories like "AKP is supported by USA, it's labeled as warm Islamic party(EVEN WE DON'T CALL TURKEY WARM ISLAMIC) ...it easily gets the support of people through religion and it sells everything in this country. Not to mention how they screwed everything...wasted water sources and many other things...

Turkish army is not like what you think...In most countries armies represent the conservaitve, backward side....in Turkish society it is the opposite. Do not forget that the people who made this country secular and modern today were 90% officers .

Turkey is slipping but not from your view....from our view.

Have you realized the contradiction is my post? :)
AKP is conservaitve but in terms of economy they're the most liberal......most of the intelelctuals in Turkey would say they sold everything in Turkey.
Turkey would never go Islamist, the thing is taht the conservatives just got on the stage more now.

Slipping where??

Turkey is an interest case as the Islamists are the economically progressive ones,  while the secular are extremely nationalistic chauvinistic. And who can forget the almighty presence of the Army guarantor of secularism and proud perpetrator of the Armenian genocide (and the Assyrian one and the Pontic one)
