Part or all of the United States power grid goes down due to terrorist event, computer hackers, or unusual solar activity. The power grid is a major terrorist target. It is also thought that foreign nations have placed "sleeper" programs in the computers that control the grid. The sun has been acting strange. All of these factors make this event a real possibility.
