Subject: Moroccan-Spanish dispute
Rostov    7/17/2002 10:30:33 AM
Anyone know of any analysis on the motivations on the Moroccan side, and/or strategy regarding the Leila/Perejil crisis? Everyone seems to be laughing it off, but I think it could easily snowball into something very serious given pre-exisiting tensions and the domestic situation in Morocco... Hmmm. Maybe StrategyPage could offer some insight?

Its a long history the morrocan-spanish dispute over that island. Fundamentaly it isnt really about that island but the attrition that exists between the 2 of them. Since the spanish goverment sized that island in 19th centurie (and other parts of northtern africa that later regain its independence) many disputes have been done and normally Spain is usually the winner of it all and its being a matter of humiliation for the morrocan goverment and a way that their president found to hide their unpopular goverment due to economic dificulties that the country is passing. Even with Portugal Maroccos has had its political and economic disputes, so this could have been a way to raise that country´s morale. The severe problem of it all was that it could have started an unnecessary war between them and drag other country's in the processe.
