Subject: Did USA support rebels in Haiti?
swami    3/21/2004 4:51:17 PM
Over the past few weeks I have heard alot of accusations that USA was behind the rebels that overthrew Aristide. They also say that Bush has been trying to get rid of Aristide from beginning. My hunch is that Bush is acting like the fire brigade and just reacting to events rather than causing the revolt, but I am open to reasonable arguments. Comments?

What rebels? Them's revolutionaries. Was not Aristide a tyrant for running for re-election (consecutive terms are a violation of the Haiti constitution) and using his police forces to disarm the population, assassinate or jail political opponents, "necklace" neighborhood leaders with flaming gasoline-filled tires, and intimidate voters? You think the "rebellion" required US assistance? These people torched police stations all the way to Port-au-Prince, as their numbers grew. Color them pissed. Pissed enough to start a revolution.
