Subject: cars we have owned.
gf0012-aust    8/17/2006 9:09:33 PM
in light of the other thread about cars and capability, I'm curious as to what cars have been favourites and owned by us... for me there are a few, and I've always tinkered with them a bit. start to finish my favourite cars (in no partic order) owned were as follows:
  • mini, '66. dumped suspension, worked motor and honda 650 megaphones for a split system
  • HK Monaro. Worked 186. yella terra head, saginaw GB.
  • HJ Sandman (errrgh) 253V8
  • Falcon XA Panel Van. Leyland P-76 Alloy V8, Offenhauser intake off a Buick, Holley 650 dbls.
  • Falcon XT. Worked 302, dumped suspension
  • Falcon XW GT. Worked 351 2 barrel
  • Falcon XY GTHO.
  • XY Wagon. 351 4bl. Modified Geelong Block (the best of all the Ford small block V8's)
  • Falcon XA 2 door. Orig motor replaced with a worked 221. Cast exhaust manifold cut and replaced with a ported and rippled mod. Holley 650 dbl pumper. custom XU-1 grind on the cam, solids. it was almost undriveable at idle. the cam used to make it bump and grind a bit at the lights. never ran official times on it, but I once cleaned up a mates Transit that had a modified 406 and FMX installed.
  • Toyota Dyna twin cab. mid mounted 351, ZF gear box from a busted Pantera. I used to run it at the Darwin Drags out at McDonnel Air Strip. Ran low 13's.
  • 76 Range Rover. 351 windsor 4bl. C6 with a shift kit. Dual fuel. Currently sitting in shed in the middle of a rebuild.
  • 2000 Mercedes Vito. Chipped and lowered 3" by factory. AFAIK its the only factory lowered Vito registered. It handles like a big fat mini cooper S - and will out corner quite a few of the rice burner boy racer pretenders. I had a couple of show cars in my early 20's during my brain fart stage. I've had 2 bikes. A Honda 300 Dream (weighed as much as a BSA 650 Thunderbolt!) and a Suzuki GTR Ramair. The Sook is in the mangroves off of Nightcliff as a legacy of exuberant but totally skill-less riding during a "Hungi". ;)

First car: a red 1978 Ford Escort RS2000, lowered suspension, with 4 spoke dragways, 225/45 Pirelli tyres, worked 2.0L engine, with single 48mm IDA Weber carby (twin 45 sidies are too hard to keep in tune IMO) extractors and 2.5inch sports exhaust and "hot-dog" muffler. 2nd car: Gemini panel van, deep "2 pac" Black paint job, lowered, dragway 4 spokes (again) worked 1.6L again with weber carby, sports exhaust etc. 3rd car: 1982 VH SLX Commodore (5.0L V8) White in standard condition. Hated this car and sold it after 3 months. 4th car: Brand new 1998 Nissan Pulsar SSS sedan, silver. In standard trim apart from sports exhaust and upgraded stereo. Drove a Subaru WRX for about 3 months in 2006, it belonged to a friend who was deploying to the Solomans as part of RAMSI and couldn't garage it anywhere. Loved the performance. Hated the idiots constantly trying to "drag" me and the general "uncomfortableness" of it. Current car: 2nd hand 2005 model Mazda SP23 sedan. Bright Yellow in standard trim. Don't mind this car. Will end up keeping it for a few years I think...

Forgot to mention, always had bikes too. Started off with a Honda "50". Then progressed to KX-80, KX-125 (when I was a kid and my grandparents still had their farm at Hayden). I now have a mid-90's KLX-250 I bought off my brother for $1500 and it runs sweet now. Have recently had the cylinder head overhauled as the engine blew late last year with the head "decked" and new cams, valves, timing chain and timing gear and headgasket installed. Ended up costing me $1400 to fix, but as I said it now runs sweet, so I'll be keeping IT for a while too...

I had a 2000 ford mustang gt roush stage 2. Fun while it lasted. thought I'd get one for me for once. Never again. You can have all of that tinny, heat-pumping, jetlag-inducing, thin-walled exhaust. Give me thick, half-rusted cast iron forever. How's this for a happy ending? Sold it about a year ago and got my wife a Chrysler TownE & Country Deluxe Emasculation Mobile. I stop and look at every old turbo Porsche that I can find. Volkswagen Things, too.

My dad had a 68 Mg-C GT. Very rare. Nothing says cool like a brass oil cooler.

Bikes: Honda 400-4. Great little bike, beautiful engine, sod to balance the carbs though and an engine oil change every 1,500 miles. BMW 100/7- went everywhere in Europe with this. Beautiful tourer. Sit all day at 160kph 2 up with full camping kit. BMW R90s- Arguably the best BM bike ever made. Cars: Volvo 242GT - don't laugh, it handled very well, great long distance tourer. Left the Falcons & Commodes of the time for dead. Mazda 626 Turbo Coupe, predecessor to the MX6. Great little car, even better with good rubber and better shocks. Ford Falcon XR6 - surprisingly good handing, crap brakes though. Subaru WRX (2000 model). Loved this car, was living in NZ at the time. Went all round the South Island and was never passed once. Only car I never had the guts to find its final limits. Current - Ford Maverick (Nissan Patrol GQ) Turbo Diesel. Great old truck, been everywhere (Simpson, etc), better than anything new (its an 89 model).... so much for progress eh? Just had an engine rebuild and I'm keeping it for the next 10 years at least. On the last big trip (Madigan Line) had better fuel enconomy, was faster on road and better off road than a brand new 3ltr Hylux and a 2002 Cruiser (both turbo diesels). Current - WRX 2004 Hatch - better engine than the 2000 model, but handling not as good - next step STi suspension (Xmas present?) then it will be perfect for the next 5 or so years.

Though I'm in the realm of sporty sedans these days, my most memorable car was an '82 Mercury Lynx. Memorable because I got it real cheap from a Puerto Rican guy who rebuilt the transmission and was kind enough to leave a few spare parts in a box in the trunk. The trany ran great though, it was the fact that the car burned radiator fluid that made it truly memorable. Winter gave other drivers the impression of a steam train on the road.

Let's see..... 1. 1970 Ford Torino Brougham, 390 CI HO V8, 4-bbl. carb, auto. Top speed; 150+ mph (about 240 km/h). (1976-82) 2. 1967 Ford Mustang coupe, 289 V8, auto. About 80 mph (130 km/h) due to some weird synergy between trans. and rear end. Never did figure it out, sold it after three years of trying. (1977-80) 3. 1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula, 400 CI V8, 4 bbl. Rust bucket, a true dog. Sold it for parts after four months. (1980) 4. 1975 Chevy Impala Estate station wagon, 350 CI V8, 2-bbl. Drove it for ten years, gave it to my cousin who put it in a demolition derby. After he destroyed everything else on the track with it with rear-end rams, they banned station wagons from future events. (1980-1990) 5. 1985 Chevy Camaro, 3.6 L V6 auto., F.I. Very rugged car, used it for a lot of things you'd blanch at (like climbing over rocks on back roads while doing census work). Sold it after five years for parts. (1990-1995) 6. 1985 Jeep Cherokee Chief, same type of Chevy V6 except 2-bbl. carb. Auto, 4x4 "Selec-Trac" system (no need to lock/unlock front hubs by hand). Drove it for ten years, sold it for parts. Incredibly tough little vehicle. (1995-2005) 7. 1990 Chevy Lumina APV minivan, bought with 202,000 mi. on the clock for $800 from original owner (insurance agent). Same Chevy V6 except 2-bbl. carb (referred to as "dual-port F.I. system" in manual- one look at the diagram gave the show away). I'm looking forward to putting about another 50,000 mi. on it at least. Front-wheel drive, automatic transmission, and it handles snow and ice with a presumption that I'm sure would have amused Mark Twain. And since it has a mostly plastic body, rust isn't really an issue - finally.(2005-date) Cheers. eon

Always at sea so never owned one until now: 2000 Audi A6 quattro, 5 speed stick. Thinking about selling it, or dropping in a PES Supercharger. Which I can do as it is one of the few manual A6's on the East Coast. http://www.audipower.net/index.php?pg=2&news_id=70&sid=392f6968d1b4864dd0000159fb4e047f This Audi is a weird car...One day you love it, the next day you hate it.e.g. I put a baby seat in the back and the computer thought my kid wasn't a real person, and this caused an airbag error to occur....in the driver airbag no less, which they (the local dealership) can't fix. basically anything electric in an audi friggin sux...reason? I dunno, but its all made in hungary... cheers W PS...now bicycles thats a passion.. I have a circa'92 Basso campignola everything with friction gears and a cyclocross cluster.... absolute classic...climbs like a monkey and bombs downhill like a demon. beautiful bike and even the "fixie" crowd give it the nod on the street.
