Subject: Arguments for and against PZH 2000
BLUIE006    7/14/2008 8:40:04 AM
Despite my previous support for the K9 Thunder , the current fuel crisis has changed my assessment, as we know the K9 requires two vehicles , and carriers only 48 shots compared to the PZH (60) this means that K9 system would require more diesel/fuel* for an additional vehicle and more aviation fuel to resupply. Havent crunch the numbers but.... common sense!!! suggests .... that This means that the potential cost savings of purchasing a cheap market dominate system over a high end system are negated …. Thoughts?

Pros:
Its German (Some stereotypes are true - Its a well engineered piece of gear)
Has excellent firing capabilities - Range, Accuracy, RoF etc.
Has operational data to help with understanding logistical and mainentance burden - (Dutch in Afghanistan)

Cons:

Big and Heavy - not an expeditionary or rapid deployment system.
Maintenance burden "Rumoured" to be high.  Cant substantiate, just what I hear.
Needs integration with AFATDS (Advanced Field Artillery Targeting and Direction System) scope of work to do this unknown to me.
Required integration work to shoot Excalibur Munition - Scope unknown (May be significant)

Just some quick thoughts from me.  I am a huge fan of that piece of gear however and I hope that it is selected.

I've only seen  a static Pz but was impressed with its build quality.  The same feeling didn't travel through the loins for the K9.

I'd prefer to the Pz for a number of reasons, incl the fact that we interact at a tech level with the germans quite a bit - I'd like to see that cemented further

So any possible date tag on what we will select and the exact number we will likely procure?

I understand that there are some concerns over the safety of the horizontal stowage of projectiles and chages in the K-9

The  way things are looking, the plan for a SPH for Army may be a dream rather than a plan.
Would not surprise me if it was replaced  with only an M777 buy or maybe just an upgrade of the M-198s.
