Subject: Firebugs relighting Victorian fires
BLUIE006    2/7/2009 9:02:37 PM
The Country Fire Authority says it is unsure of how many arsonists there are, or their identities, but has confirmed that some of the fires raging across tens of thousands of hectares are being deliberately relit. Steve Warrington, the deputy chief of CFA operations at the emergency centre, says a blaze burning in Churchill in the Gippsland region is spreading faster than expected due to suspected arson. "We had predictions yesterday that we thought there would be spotting of about seven or eight kilometres," he told Local Radio. "We know we do have someone who is lighting fires in this community. While we often think it's spotting, we also know that there are people lighting fires deliberately." But he says even without arson, the fires have burned more intensely than anyone anticipated. "A lot of these fires actually went over expectations," he said. "This was one of them. It actually exceeded expectations and went towards the coast." At least 35 people have been killed and more than hundreds of homes have been destroyed in what Victorian Premier John Brumby has described as the worst weekend in Victoria's history.

These fire bugs should be considered enemies of the state (Terrorists) and prosecuted in a similar manner. http://www.strategypage.com/CuteSoft_Client/CuteEditor/Images/emkulou.gif" align="absMiddle" border="0" alt="" />

This is an absolute F*!king outrage....

After weeks of extreme heat, why would anyone deliberately light fires,in those weather conditions? Unless they wanted to cause extreme carnage...and attack the nation and its populous ( with or without a political agenda) - This is terror at its finest....

The full resources of the federal government should be brought into play here:   Lock and load....

the sad thing is that the stats show that the highest ratio of firebugs comes from volunteer fire fighters or ex firies.

Tie them to trees in the path of the fire.

I just saw the headline when opening up my browser.  My condolences to those who have lost loved ones.  And for those who caused this, well to quote Pinhead (Hellraiser movies) "Your suffering will be legendary even in Hell."

Worse fire toll ever.  Over a hundred have lost their lives so far, and the fires are not over yet.

The PM has said they are mass murders and the AG has said that attempted murder/murder will become the automatic charge......rightly so too

Pyro-terrorism?

Points worth consideration?.

In 2003 an FBI memo alerted law enforcement agencies that an al-Qaeda terrorist being held in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.

In July 2007, a post was made to numerous jihadist boards and then spread to a number of blogs citing a previously issued fatwa authorizing the setting of forest fires as a weapon of jihad. The post began "this is an invitation to the Muslims of Europe and America, Australia and Russia to burn forests." It went on to state the justification under Islamic Sharia law for this action and to cite its benefits for jihadists.

No publicity for these rats but ruthless prosecution the Lincoln County War way-if you
know what I mean.

In the meantime, my sincerest condolences for those who died and my greatest admiration
for those who fight these fires. I cannot even begin to tell you how brave the men on the fire
lines are  I owe my own life to such men: TWICE.

Terrible tragedy.  Could efforts have been undertaken to reduce the risk e.g. preventative fires?

Yes, but unfortunately some in the "Green" lobby don't believe in intervention or prevention and have managed to convince too many decision makers that nature is best left to it's own devices.

The concern, apparently, is that controlled burning will kill or leave homeless a number of endangered species.

Just glad that my relies in the affected areas have made it through, my heart aches for those who didn't.
