Subject: Hypothetical: If there was to be a ANZAC force, what would NZ need to contribute?
albywan    9/6/2009 10:05:22 PM
with it commonly accepted that NZDF do not have the resources to contribute substantially to a ANZAC deployment, what would they need equipment wise - lets assume the personnel were also available... the scenario that the force is to be deployed is Fiji in 2015, to overthrow a military regime. Key factors to consider include, a high number of tourists that would need to be looked after/evacuated, control of the airport, control of the port facilites and costal waters, control over Nadi and Suva. What would you have NZDF shopping for to meet their side of the commitment? additional ANZAC frigates, or a compliment of 4 "Enhanced ANZAC" frigates? A multirole vessel such as the San Antonio class to land ground troops, act as a off shore helicopter platform with medical facilites, and transport up a contingent of LAVIIIs? F16 aircraft to compliment the RAAF hornet package? A replacement for the ageing C130s, maybe a mix of C27 and C5 aircraft? Armed NH90 Copters to compliment the troop carrying NH90s?

Assuming the funds were available: http://www.strategypage.com/CuteSoft_Client/CuteEditor/Images/emcrook.gif" alt="" />

A few idea's

1. VTUAV ( Similar to MQ-8B)  [ armed with 70mm Rockets]
2. Littoral Combat Ships - Austral
( Maintain a fleet of two ANZAC II ( future frigates) / Two LCS / Project Protector)
3. UCAV (MQ-9 Reaper or larger)
4. AMS II (Armoured Mortar System)+PGMM - for use on LAVIII chassis ( or Dragon Fire)
5. BA609
6.  C-130J/AM400M
7. Absalon Class Combat / Flexible Support Ship

* Ability to maintain!!!! 1 Battalion (light motorised-LAV/LOV) on constant deployment.

Doesnt that require 3 or 4 Battalions in the rotation to provide one constantly on deployment? So you are talking about pretty much doubling or quadrupling the Active New Zealand Infantry force.

At the very least, they would probably need to add an additional Land Force Group

During the 2009 Defence Review one would hope that there was enough content in the public submissions/ meetings relating to kiwis voicing their disgust in the state of the NZDF, too warrant some improvements and increases.
