Subject: What a whacky election it will be
Aussiegunneragain    3/26/2010 11:06:58 PM
I was just thinking what a whacky federal election it is likely to be this year. From what I can see the best thing that could happen for the Liberal Party is that Tony Abbott is completely annihalated, so that they get rid of him and replace him with somebody decent next term. If he does ok then Rudd is likely to be knifed by Gillard next term and while I don't agree with her ideologically, I have to agree that she is politically formidable and more competent than the rest of the class of clowns she works with. An Abbott/Gillard matchup in 2013 would probably go very badly for the Liberals and leave them in opposition for a very long time. That is why as somebody who has just moved back to a marginal Labor seat in Brisbane I'm voting for Labor in the reps this election for the first time ever, though for the Liberals or some minor party/independents (but not the Greens!) in the Senate to f*ck the ALP's averages in getting any stupid legislation through. The only comfort that I can draw is that real Labor voters are in more of a bind than I am. It is in their interest for Rudd to do badly but win, so that Gillard has a reason to take over before he completely screws things up for them. However, they can't risk changing their vote to Abbott to try and engineer this as it might lose the ALP the election. Small mercies.

Robin Williams is a progressive liberal, and he called you wonderful Australian people as "English Redneck."

And some of you liberals in Australia yet still have problem understanding why I find those progressive liberals in the US repulsive, and conservatives much more amicable to be around.

Williams is a comedian and was making a joke and Rudd, our national leader, turns around and insults the population of a US state where Australian businesses have significant interests  in response. Where did this tosser get his diplomatic training from?

Quite possibly from my country, the good ol' us of a and rudd's focal.  We've pretty much mastered the art of peeving off everybody else.  Really, we own bad hubris; we can take it, too, though typically only at the majority center.  Not attempting here to dip into Oz domestic politics or anything substantive.  But basically Americans cannot help but to like Ozzies regardless of the politics (goes for me, too).  We can learn from your people, both those low and high in status.  Rudd is just another politician and his time will pass.  No worries.

The fact that Rudd didn't "get" Robin Williams at all is a joke in itself

passing comment on alabama just shows he hopeless he is at being street smart and definitely reinforces why his reputation in DFAT was pretty bad.  (hence why he did his on Krystalnacht against the Dept when he got in)

what a loser

Thank you for your response.

I can't see China from my place so I guess that gives me the opportunity to be a little more relaxed about my place in the world than you.

I think that Robin Williams tongue ran away from his brain (normal for him), when he said 'English Rednecks' I think he meant to say 'English rejects'.

If he actually said that, all would be cool, that said, he has apologised, and so doing made our lamentable PM appear even smaller!

Interesting performance on the 7:30 report from Abbott last week, scary when you consider what he was actually saying is he does not think or respond well under pressure rather than that he deliberately lies.

He really is the Liberal Partys answer to Mark Latham.  God help us if he becomes PM he will need to be shadowed by a minder who has a syringe of a sedative every time he attends delicate negotiations.

I hope the next election gives us some talented new blood on both sides as well as getting rid of the dead wood and dangerous cranks.

p.s. good riddance to Minchin any chance of losing Fielding too?
