Subject: Commando Regiments

I know potential/future army structures have been done to death in this forum, as I have read most of the threads. However I was wondering, if the RAR was increased to 9 battalions would we be able to support a second or third commando regiment? If it was a second, would that be supportable to have one battalion overseas at all times as they are special forces with a higher operational tempo, (also taking into account if they dropped their Tag- E duties) or do we still need the three battalions to do the raise, train, support thing?

We have two commando regiments - 1 CDO (reserve) and 2 CDO (regular) on top of the SAS.

Sorry about that, what I mean to say is. If we raised another Regular commando regiment (3rd Cdo) and took away TAG duties from 2nd Cdo then would we be able to deploy at least one of them as a full battalion and sustain it due to the fact they are SF and have a higher operational tempo.

If you needed a battalion-sized force, shouldn't you send light infantry?

Why would the TAG role be taken from 2 Cdo Regt? Where else are they going to get such an excellent level of CQB training?

Furthermore, I don't subscribe to the idea of "battalions" worth of special forces. When such forces become so large what is "special" about them any more? They just become "forces"...

It seems to me that a Sabre Sqn of SASR, a Cdo Company group from either of the Cdo Regiments plus the relevant supporting elements is about the limit of what our Special Forces can support on operations and I'm not sure why we need to increase this.

As already mentioned, larger forces than this, will simply be undertaking roles that Infantry battalions are meant to do and we have infantry battalions, so why wouldn't we use them?

Confused...

a battalion sized force of special forces is an abuse of the construct

the issue is the continued use of special forces when regulars could undertake some of those jobs

thats a political decision - not a capability decision.

having more special forces to do regular bread and butter work diminshes the skill sets of the regulars and burns out the specials with an unrealistic burden
