Subject: Lisa Blue put Hindu Goddess on swimsuit
YelliChink    5/11/2011 6:58:39 PM
http://blogs.wsj.com/scene/2011/05/11/hindu-goddess-swimsuit-sparks-outrage/ Hindu Goddess Swimsuit Sparks Outrage India-Australia relations suffered a minor setback this week, after a swimsuit by an Australian fashion designer featuring a portrait of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, sparked outrage across the subcontinent. Designer and model Lisa Burke presented the swimsuit as part of the latest collection of her Lisa Blue label at Australian Fashion Week Thursday. But when pictures of an Indian-looking model wearing a one-piece swimsuit with a portrait of Lakshmi printed on its front and rear made their way to India, Hindu nationalists didn’t like what they saw. Over the weekend, they took to the streets in several Indian cities, including Hyderabad where pictures show activists burning the Australian flag in protest against what they viewed as an act of deep disrespect. Ms. Burke’s label was quick to announce a halt in production, vowing that the Lakshmi swimsuit would never make it to stores. “The image of Goddess Lakshmi will not appear on any piece of Lisa Blue swimwear for the new season, with a halt put on all production of the new range and pieces shown on the runway from last week removed. This range will never be available for sale in any stockists or retail outlets anywhere in the world, ” said a statement posted on the Lisa Blue Web site Saturday. ===============================================================

Hanlon's Razor states:

it only needs slight modification

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity, (and innocent cultural ignorance)"

The leaders of the Hindu extremists accepted her apology.

It may be innocent but it is definately stupid. Would the designer put a print of Jesus being crucified on the models arse and tits? Dick head.

Dear. Lord.

In practice setting off a certain religious group is dumb, be the reason malice or cultural ignorance. It can be bad for sales (though it can also be good for sales thanks to the publicity) and it can be bad for international relations.

In principle I despise all glorification of religions. Being a believer should have absolutely no larger status than being a Republican, a vegetarian or a golfer. Sickening, always ass-ripping sickening to see religiously motivated outrage over non-aggressive impulses.

concur, she wasn't ever going to be a rocket scientist, so this is just the action of someone who's as sharp as a bowling ball......

she should have been smarter, but she had the sense to apologise.  if she's got children though we're in trouble as they're bound to be just as stupid.... :)

Then again, I never heard of Lisa Blue before. Now I know the name. If her clothing was sold in Finland I would now notice it and maybe tell my prettier half about it so she would consider the label next time when shopping for swimsuits.

And how many fundamentalist Hindu was among the targeted customer base? (maybe a lot, I don't know, but I suspect the number is around 15).

She apologized, pulled the print off the markets, is largely forgiven by those offended and is known by me. Through a military discussion board, with the help of Yellichink. So on a second thought maybe naming her dumb is a mistake after all. Maybe she is very very smart.

Anyone visit her site? She's got a story there and all.

Fair points, what she did was insulting but the aggressive response was not warrented. They could have just contacted her and politely informed her that it was insulting, then she would probably have pulled the line.

I also didn't consider the point that your average dress designer probably has a fairly limited understanding of the socio-political implications of religious symbols outside of their own culture. Personally I'd be lousy at designing a dress so I can't really crucify her for this.

Gay Jesus exhibition attacked

A SERIES of 12 photographs depicting Jesus as gay  enraged the Pope, and they have now become the focus of attack by fundamentalist Christians in Sweden.

Compared to leftist modern un-art did to Christian faith, Hindu extremists really have nothing to complain about.

Even though what she did may have been wrong, I still don't see what burning the Australian Flag would achieve.

I remember when I worked at Big W there were a pair of thongs on sale where the design was a cross. It was sort of artistic and whoever designed it probably had no intention of it being compared with 'the cross', but someone complained and it was recalled.

That's because you don't know anything about Hindu politics. Nothing is better than blasphemous actions by evil white Anglo people for the purpose of rallying your Hindu extremist base.
