Subject: The M1117 Guardian in Iraq
vince870    3/20/2005 8:51:44 PM
The up armord hummve is a good vehicle, but I think the M1117 Guardian now use by the U.S MP's is a great vehicle for convoy escorts and other dutys with an elevated risk. It has more fire power than an up armord hummve (A turret mounted .50 and Mk 19 like the marine AAV) and at 17 tons has better protection for the crew. What other vehicles in iraq or afganistan do you think are more suitible for ceritan jobs than the current vehicles.

I have only seen pictures and read the spec on this one.  Here is what I was thinking. Has our military over thought of looking around to see what other countries has in this line and maybe buying some of them that are good and improving on them. It it"s good I don't see why we can't buy it and use it. getting the job done is what it all about no matter who makes or build it.

While the hummve is good the armoured hummve is something forced on the military by congress. To them an armoured hummve is the same thing as an armoured car but costs less. The fact that it has less protection is meaningless. To them since there both armoured they are the same thing.
The M1117 is designed for convoy protection, designed to be mineproof and with more firepower. The hummve was designed as a lightweight, unarmoured, behind the lines vehicle to replace the jeep.
