Subject: Italy with Radar?
Ghostrider    1/3/2006 3:08:59 PM
So it could have been a possibitly if Germany shared some of its technology with Italy. Could Italy have prevented the losses it suffered if it had radar, the ships were constructed fairly well, but lacked in some AA assets. however with Radar could they have gained or at least put up a fight with the Brits! who knows?? would have been interesting though. I also think that Italy should have developed a Maritme Air arm, I mean Italy is practicaly an Island, and they should have develop some type of Air Arm that could assist its Navy and such? just another what if question.

We'd have to find a expert on German naval radars. I understand the radar on the Bismarck & other German ships of 1940-41 gave bearing, but not usefull range. I know nothng about their antiair radars. The Japanese were very skilled and effective at night actions without radar. The Italian fleet would have done well copying them. The Italian airforce had enough usefull torpedo bombers and reconissance aircraft, but zilch cooperation between navy & air. Fixing those two defeiciencies would have been a major help.

My understanding on German radar like yourself Carl is that it was simple, however the germans had great rangefinders. I will try and look into that more to see if I can get any names of their types.

Be sure to determine the ship, year/month the various models were used. These varied widely within each Navy.

Germans put giant RADARs on their capital ships as they built them from 1936 on. UK focused Radar on air defense with anti surface following mid war [1942?]. So at the start of the war RN had some Anti air cruisers while Germans had surface search radars [20-30km range]. But like most things german not many were produced. I just read that German weapons were designed to last 25 years!!! No wonder they were considered over produced. Soviet tanks were built to last 6 months to a year. Biggest problem with the Italian navy was shortage of fuel to train and operate. Their battle fleet was big enough to force the RN to devote something like 1/3 of their entire fleet in the Med. Also Mussoline interference didn't help. Had they been better integrated into a combined AXIS naval strategy and shared an enlarged synethic fuel industry, then they could have seriously threatened the RN in the N Atlantic and Med.

Useful question. As discussed in another thread on this site, I believe Germany probably should have set its sights on complete Axis control of the Mediterranean after the Battle of France. How could aircraft carriers and radar not have been almost indispensible to that effort?.

The Italians were far less focused on military seduction during WWII and were also not as devoted to conquering people as the Germans were.  Although the Italians had seized some land the objective of Moussilini was not to defend his land but to expand his country further as Hitler had.  The last thing Moussilini was goging to spend money on was radar for his navy which was far smaller than the British Royal Navy.
