Hello everyone, I just registered to this forum though I have been browsing it for a few month now. I decided to register to bring to this forum updates on the french military (the "french union" discussion board is too inactive in my opinion^^). If you don't give s**t, don't bother sharing your opinion. I thought it would be interresting since a lot of western armies are currently in A-Stan and it's good to know about your allies. A little about me now. Im french, if you haven't figured it out already, currently studying in the US. I am not an expert in any weapon systems nor have I been in the military so don't jump on me if I make a mistake, I am here to learn :)

Welcome to you from another expat Frenchie.
There's been much disaffection, not only on the French Union (c'est quoi ce machin?) board, but also on the entire Strategypage forum.
Don't ask me why, but I think that the US election and the piss-poor technical outlay of this site have a lot to do with it being so quiet of late.

So, it's nice to see new faces keyboards around here. This has not happened in a long time AFAIK.
French posters, however, have never lasted long on these boards, since mostly overly nationalistic types seem to have ever bothered to register, such as the much-regretted French Stratege, a.k.a. François-Sébastien Coquoricault. He left this forum a few months ago in disarray, after trying very hard to get everybody else to admit that the French military is the best in the world, that French technology is second only to ET's, and that the Rafale is way superior to, and more stealthy than anything else flying today incl. God's archangels, thereby making an utter fool of himself in spite of his outstanding knowledge of defense matters.

As a veteran, and I must say retardedly loyal poster on Strategypage, I can therefore recommend that you avoid flaming, ad-hominem attacks, and making unsubstantiated claims. It has become customary here for posters to research their posts and back them up with relevant links and reputable sources, and make every possible effort at using proper language, grammar, and syntax, even if English is not their mother tongue.

As you have probably noticed while lurking, this is a fairly conservative, adult and staunchly moderate, pro-Western and pro-US place. Extremist opinions, and hateful rants, are certainly not welcome here. Please do read the rules of use, and act accordingly.
I mean, really: mets une passoire à ton dégueuloir!
Also, regarding the technical side, this site is not at the tech level you have seen on other discussion boards: the toolbar above the writing window is hopeless with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, so it isn't too bad an idea to stop using it altogether. You won't miss it!

I hope to read from you soon. I'm on the Israel board usually, but I lurk here and there.

Don't worry Shirush I spend a lot of time on other military forums (Secret Défense de Libération et Défense Ouvert de Le Point par exemple) and I know the truth bout the french military, the rafale, and on. So I won't brag about my country's military knowing it's not in good shape!

NGermanI, I study at Grand Valley State University in  West michigan. Pretty good school, very fun, warm welcome etc!

FCUS means French Connection United States (like the brand FCUK). Sorry i didn't spend much time looking for a username/

Thanks for making us aware of Jean-Dominique Merchet's blog on the Propagandastaffel  website.
The forum looks monolinear, and there are no separate topics, which makes it a little tiring: just one thread with 269 posts as of now.
I couldn't google up anything about the other one on Le Point though.
Can you provide us with a link? It'd help to be able to see a non-leftist point of view, although what I saw on Merchet's site is more like "just facts", which in itself is a welcome surprise coming from Libération. The forum also seems to be defense-only-no politics just like the Izzie one.

Say, what is it you're studying in Michigan? How're the babes?

Here. I finally found the other French forum. I appears I had omitted to set the Google advanced search tool to "French". Oh-hum!
It's interesting that they're both MSM-hosted, unlike the US and the Israeli ones I know.
It's an interesting read too, but the lack of respect of these otherwise knowledgeable posters for the rules, the grammar and the spelling of the French language really bugs me!
Is there a similar problem with the French education system nowadays as there seems to be with the MoD? Or is just that I'm a pedantic old fart?

Im studying auditing (accounting), corporate finance and investments. pretty interesting.

The babes are...most of them cute, but to be honest I prefer french girls. The only problem is that West Michigan is part of the "bible belt" so is very conservative. So basically hard to do anything if you're not WITH the girl. I won't go into too much details. Let's just say that I've worked in NYC for a few moths this year and NY girls are completly different...

Im impressed by the number of engaged couples, or couples who have been together since high school or freshman year (im a senior). It seems that here you mary the first person you get with. no wonder the divorce rate is so high!! (above 56%!!).

I really like the LE POINT forum. Very professional. The LIBERATION blog was pretty good a few months ago cuz you could comment on the articles. but because of too much trolling the author disabled that possibility and created a shitty forum instead. Which is sad because you had some very very interesting and experienced posters.
Anyway, i find it interresting to have facts and stories from Libé along with the professional articles from Le Point

now abou the spelling, I think that people just don't make the effort. Probably the french education system is also a cause; but it will change in september 2009, the Education National is being heavly reformed (yessss finally!!!).
You have to admit french is hard to spell too and that you may also be a "pedantic old fart" ^^ !!

Well, yes, I confess that I tend to avoid having to write anything in French, since QCing my spelling in my mother tongue takes me ages, and in any case I don't get to read much in French, so I'm a much rustier old fart than I'd like to be. English is so much easier, and you don't need to go over everything to add the accents. I never got myself a French keyboard, and I'm rather incapacitated whenever confronted with one!

When I got to the Hebrew University back then in the early Miocene, I had the same situation: all the good-looking girls were already married, pregnant, and...army veterans!
So, I guess you will manage to adapt to a target-poor environment without going too steady as I did back then. Try drilling for divorcees out-of-campus. This works. Remember, you've got a big advantage: you're French! And no, there's nothing wrong with switching to manual in times of penury!

Hi FCUS,

Another French living in the US. Welcome onboard.

I am ljust like you, I am pretty fond of Defense forums, I may advise to read another pretty interesting blog  named "théatre des opérations".

Hope we'll have a more lively French Union Forum...
