Subject: Hooker, a Combat Casualty?
Carl S    9/19/2005 10:48:15 PM
This is basicly a question. Once or twice I have seen refrences to Hooker being unhorsed by a cannon shot early in the Chancellorsville battle. The question or hypothesis raised is was he incapacitated at least temporarily by some injury? Severe pain from a spinal injury, brusied ribs, maybe internal bleeding, or a concussion would explain why the usually aggresive Hooker abruptly "choked". Any experts out there know anything of this?

Hooker was actually leaning against a pillar of the Chancellor Tavern when it was struck by a Confederate shell. He was sent flying and knocked unconcious. He probably suffered a concusion but unsure about that. The problem was he refused to turn over command to Couch until it was too late.

I guess evidence for a concussion would be in a account by a doctor who saw Hooker shortly after the the injury. Barring that other eyewitness descriptions of those in contact with Hooker during the day might have refrences to symptoms displayed of concussion, shock, or other injury. Beyond that, was Hooker displaying a change of attitude before the shell strike, or was that entirely after? Was Couch nearby? Who else in authority was present?

There are tons of books to read on the topic, but check out this site: http://www.civilwarhome.com/chancell.htm Particulalry what Couch wrote. Interesting comment of Hooker abstaining from drink...and that it may have had a negative effect on him!
