Subject: How do most Brits feel about the US?
gcw1995    6/8/2005 4:55:35 PM
How do most Brits feel about US government and Americans in general. Here in America, most americans really look at the british as americas only true friend in time of crisis.

Our idiot-savant cousin who we love, wish we could do as well as you, yet we are glad we don't make the same mistakes.

A brave question, and one I'll try and answer in a balanced fashion. I think we feel superior to you guys - goodness knows why as it makes no sense whatsoever! We Brits can be very patronising sometimes.... By and large, I think most British would accept that we owe you a debt of honour for your support in the two world wars, although most don't understand how crucial it was especially in 2WW. By and large we recognise that you guys have mainly been a positive force for the world, but we're not totally uncritical. Generally we agree with you about more things that we would disagree about. With regard to specific policies, my perception is that support for the Gulf War 2 is about 50/50 for and against. I have to say that I think that George Bush isn't particularly liked. Its partly his style (very religious and very folksy - neither of which work well over here), but I also think that his view of striking first when necessary has created alot of fear, although that might be just my opinion. Other than that, I think we get along pretty well really. Maybe the other Brits on the boards would disagree with these comments - I'll be interested to see what they say. John

I like most Americans as individuals, and believe them to have decent values. However I do not like certain aspects of American politics, and have little respect for your military machine. I also find that Americans come across a tad indoctrinated where it comes to foreign affairs, and can be blindly patriotic. I don't mean any offense mind, I think the British younger generation are complete c**** for the most part, so am not really biased against.

Thank you for the opinions. As an american ,I'll shall give mine. I agree with you on most of everything. The US political system is bit troublesome. America does have a small lack of respect towards others. They also do a lot of good in the world too. Gulf war 1 was needed and justifiable. Gulf war 2 was supposed to be to disarm a massive amount of WMDs, which none were found. I supported gulf war 1. I do not support the Gulf war 2. I believe most americans support most brits opinions on George Bush and the american military. I am an american and must support my country and service men and service women in these times. I think soldiers lives and money spent on the war could be used in a better fashion. Perhaps looking for UBL more or helping feed people in the world. Like I said before, I love my country. I appreciate Britians help greatly also. I also think that Brits and americans agree more than disagree.

I pretty much agree with InterestedAmateurs post. I'd just add that if push comes to shove, I think we'd be there, shoulder to shoulder with our American cousins. BTW, I'm not sure what Yimmy meant by "indoctrinated", but maybe "blinkered" may be a better phrase. (It does appear sometimes that GENERALLY, the American public can still be a little insular when it comes to world news/events.....just a patronising Brits point of view!) I hold the U.S military in pretty high regard (Well, the USN at least). During a couple of deployments to the Gulf, including GW1, I met up with quite a few Yank Seamen (double entendre thoroughly intended!). I always got on fine with them, and visited each others ships. They'd get a few tinny's from us, and they'd get a couple of rounds in at the PX.(USN having dry ships...will the Americans never learn?!)

"and have little respect for your military machine. Why is that?" **** Due to various things, such as what comes across to me as a "shoot first ask questions later", attitude. Also their scruffyness, and apparant lack of discipline. Most of my opinion is just formed on news reports, and footage from Iraq, however I also know of a US National Guard soldier, a nice bloke, but the state of his uniform in pictures he showd me of him around camp would have got me a rollocking over here. My only personal experice with American soldiers is again with National Guard, and individualy they were good guys, but their walking into a bar full of soldiers from different nationalities, and trying to get everyone to sing I think the American national amthem was a tad ludicrous. I think a lot of Americas problems military wise are due to a lack of career soldiers, and a high turnover of college kids trying to pay for their education. **** "I also find that Americans come across a tad indoctrinated where it comes to foreign affairs what do you mean by "indoctrinated"?" **** Indoctrinated may have been a harsh word to use, but that is how I see it. I see it like this because of the way Americans have their flag in every class-room, and every morning have the school sware an oath of allegiance. These are just my opinions formed by what I have been exposed to of course, add in a bit of history, if I am wrong in any of my assumptions I am more than happy to be explained different.

"I see it like this because of the way Americans have their flag in every class-room, and every morning have the school sware an oath of allegiance." Why is this a bad idea? It is not its a very good idea, look at all the people that come to america over the last 100 years or so they come from mostly every nation on earth.Almost every america is ready to fight for his country, where you look at Europe and look at the high muslims moving in. Look at france over the last 10-15 years there muslim pop went up 10% and they dont support france or the E.U., they want to do there own things and without unity with all people of one nation thats how TERRORISM starts in that country. You might not beable to see it now but look in 10-20 years where france and some parts of europe will me the next fighting ground for terrorism.

I never said it was a bad idea - I said it was indoctrination. As by Cambridge, Indoctrination - to repeat an idea or belief frequently to someone in order to persuade them to accept it: Some parents were critical of attempts to indoctrinate children in green ideology. They have been indoctrinated by television to believe that violence is normal.
