Subject: Muslim panel to be consulted before raids?
reefdiver    9/25/2006 9:29:30 AM
Has the government gone bloody bonkers in the UK? As I understand it, the police will now consult with a panel of Muslims leaders before making raids on suspected Muslims. Will the same apply for other ethnic, religious, and ethnic groups - Irish, Indians, Buddists, blacks etc? The UK appears to be establishing a separate system of justice for Muslims? Whats next - recognizing Sharia law within the Muslim community? This "small" concession seems like a really, really bad move.

I can not say I have read of this personally, but if it holds water you can bet your last dollar in the future we will be seeing a vast increase in British voting for the BNP.

Police to brief Muslims before terror raids

http://images.thetimes.co.uk/images/trans.gif" width=1 border=0>
POLICE have agreed to consult a panel of Muslim leaders before mounting counter-terrorist raids or arrests. Members of the panel will offer their assessment of whether information police have on a suspect is too flimsy and will also consider the consequences on community relations of a raid.

Members will be security vetted and will have to promise not to reveal any intelligence they are shown. They will not have to sign the Official Secrets Act.

The first panel, expected to consist of four people, will be set up initially in London. Tomorrow representatives from police forces across England and Wales will decide whether to make the scheme national.

Muslim groups have welcomed the move, which is understood to be backed by Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan police commissioner.

If i was an MP for that area, i would be raising bloody hell. But, i suppose that wouldn't be the politically correct thing to do. Not only that, he or she would probably have the multi-cultural squad breathing down his/her neck! What the hell?

Whoops - there appears to be some way you can accidently hit the submit button several times - before it finishes the first. Sure wish they'd redesign to allow the original poster to delete and edit posts.

I don't believe that this story is as strong as it seems, or that the panel will have the final say.

We've heard nothing about it in the media which indicates to me that it is an exaggeration.

I know something about Muslim / Police working groups (there are a number of them and they deal with issues such as "stop and search" for instance) and in reality these panels have very little power or influence.
