Subject: Pakistan 'victory' in cricket row

Pakistan cricket captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has declared a "victory for Pakistan" after he was cleared at a hearing in London of cheating in a Test match. Umpire Darrell Hair had ruled Pakistan tampered with the ball in a match against England. But Inzamam was banned for four matches - for bringing the game into disrepute. He refused to bring his side back onto the field and the match was awarded to England by default - a first in the history of international cricket. 'Fair process' Inzamam had described the allegation of ball-tampering - which caused outrage back in Pakistan - as a slight on the team's reputation. On Thursday, after a two-day code-of-conduct hearing in London, it was ruled that the ball-tampering claim was not proven. After the hearing Inzaman said: "It was a matter of the team's reputation and ball-tampering allegations meant that we cheated during the Test match. "The whole nation has supported our decision. This was a matter of respect for our team and country. We fought for what we thought was right." He also said he would not appeal against his own ban. The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Shaharyar Khan, said: "We are very satisfied and the whole process was fair, in our opinion. We are very satisfied." The London hearing also decided that Mr Hair would not officiate at the upcoming Champions Trophy in India because of "safety and security" concerns. Mr Hair afterwards refused to comment on any of the incidents that took place during the match. But he said he had no intention of resigning. "I wish to keep on being an umpire. My umpiring performance or career is on public record and if other people consider I am still good enough to umpire I will continue.
