Danton74    11/9/2006 5:28:39 PM
Former Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind has accused the US of delaying the verdict in Saddam Hussein's trial to coincide with the mid-term polls. He told BBC One's Question Time he had no evidence but the timing of the verdict was "deeply suspect". "http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6134616.stm"

I can't think of any important political events in the US that would be effected by Saddam hanging now. If one wanted to effect the election the best way to do it would be to hang him three weeks before and cause a sudden spike in the polls in the governments favor because most people at least would be happy to see him gone even those who have abstract objections to hanging people.  Any sooner and it would be too obviou.s
In any case when it comes to someone like Saddam there is really no moral objection to getting strategic advantage out of his fate because he has compromised himself so much already. Of course trying to influence our own elections is different then trying to influence the war.

By the way as a "former foreign secretary" is a diplomat shouldn't he be more diplomatic then to make comments on other peoples elections.
