Well, if politicians will try to fight two expeditionary conflicts on a peacetime budget, what do they expect?

With apologies to Sir Humphrey Appleby the mythical permanent secretary

Sir Humphrey-        "Bernard what is the purpose of our defense policy?"
Bernard Woolley-   "To defend Britain."
Sir Humphrey-        "No Bernard, It's to make people believe Britain is defended."
Bernard Woolley-   "The Islamofascists?"
Sir Humphrey-        "Not the Islamofascists, they know were not; the British people."

The Type 22 is obsolete anyway, not like it would be sent into a war zone, eh?

And you just can't believe these media reports., the MOD has denied on several occasions that there will be a lengthy delay on the CVF . And  late last year, The Times announced the RN wouldn't leave port in 2008, of course the RN has since announced some of it's biggest exercises in years for 2008 including a 8 month deployment by 11 British warships and submarines.

Let's just wait and see shall we?

You're being a bit harsh on the Batch 3's Padfoot - they were only commissioned around 1990, and with an upgrade to their electronics they still have around 10 years of life left easily. I consider them to be some of the best frigates ever designed.

I would argue the Type 22 batch 3's are our most capable surface combatants.  The Type 23's with the electric propulsion the new sonar will no doubt be superior ASW platforms, however the 22's are fitted out as flagships, and have various advantages.

So when do all the defence cuts take place?

Surely they would announce them at budget time, eh? All we got was an extra £2bn above the core budget for Afghanistan and Iraq.

Maybe the reports of the defence budget being cut in half were inaccurate?

It appears that it's all still under discussion - according to ARSSE there was a big meeting at the MoD about a month ago. If the cuts are any where near as bad as is being suggested, it'll take some time for it all to be sorted out.
