Subject: India, the UNO and Somalia
Tigerassault    5/22/2004 1:40:23 PM
At the height of the UN intervention in Somalia, American marines in full battle gear were charging down Somalian streets killing left and right to achieve what they called goals in favour of restoring order and peace. What they achieved were more casualties than the Somalians were capable of on their own. That was when a comapny of Indian forces were flown to Mogadishu... (The Indian PM had commented to the UN Secgen that his forces had a better way to deal with lawlessness) The Indians on settling down in their sector, immediately made contact with the local warlords and militia commanders. They explained that they would hold their forces in check if the Somalians kept theirs in line. Rules and possible punishments were laid down, and when the 'ceasefire' began, the Indians moved in food, medicines and aid, while setting up hospitals and medical care centres for the local population. When a convoy of Indian troops was attacked, they turned on the ambushers and slaughtered them en masse. But rather than gloat over it, they wasted no time in calling together local leaders and elders and explained the situation. hefty ex gratias were handed to the kin of the dead Somalians, and the goodwill was maintained. But the US troops refused to learn from the Indian way. They continued to fight their battle against the very people they had come to protect and in the end, the UN operation had to pulled out - indians included. What do the Somalians on this panel think? Somalian??
