Somalia and the United States are linked in many ways. There are a large number of Somali immigrants currently living in Somalia, mainly in Minnesota, Texas and Georgia (Atlanta). The ill-conceived US military intervention of 1993 in Somalia, was a get acquainted session that brought Americans and Somalis face to face. The contact continues by the presence of large number of US military forces in Djibouti and the forth-mentioned migration of Somalis to the US.
The current US administration is missing unprecedented opportunity to gain a valuable ally in the African continent and the Muslim world. There are people in the current US administration and leaders that do not see how much can be gained by a thoughtful intervention and being a catalyst for stability.
Somali’s are tiered of war and anarchy and are longing for the return of order and civil service. They long for the return of their country’s dignity overseas and their membership in the world community. The current US leaders could be very effective in bringing about the resolution of this bloody conflict that rages in Samalia.
My advice to leaders in the US would be to think of a measured, well though-out plan, that involves political aid and consultation backed by real resources to bring the war-mongering people that are currently running Somalia to ruins.
Backing up this political and socio-economic intervention should be real resource that will defeat these war loads. A golden opportunity to make a partner in the world stage similar in magnitude to that of current day Japan, Western Europe and others, is slowly slipping away.
