Subject: Sea Sparrow question
kensohaski    2/16/2008 11:27:17 AM
Are the SM-2/SM-3 a result or a modern version of the Sea Sparrow. I was under the impression that they were. Please help.

No, those are very different systems.  The SM-2/SM-3 are developments from the SM-1, which was a development of the RIM-24 Tartar.  The RIM-7 Sea Sparrow was a modification of the AIM-7 Sparrow AAM.

Based on the name it seems extremely likely the RIM-162 ESSM ("Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile") is a development of the Sea Sparrow, although apparently it is far more capable.  But then, the SM-2/SM-3 are much more capable than even just the SM-1, and incredibly better than the original Tartar.

Do a Google search for Project Bumblebee. Good reading and will give you the lineage of the Standard Missile rounds.

There's a long proud history there. SeaSparrow was kinda an afterthought that turned out to be a great platform and with ESSM an outstanding one.

Next to Sidewinder which seems to be in a class by itself, the Navy Tantalus program has got to be the most outstanding rocketry program in Human history surpassing even the incredibly successful Saturn and Trident programs for achieving its original goals.

If there is a system that even has a ghost of a chance to evolve into an effective  rocket boosted  ABM:  it will be Standard/Aegis.

ESSM took a dog of an A2A rocket and turned it into an EFFECTIVE SAM by using what worked in the Standard.

And the Standard 1

Notice the changes to Sparrow?

Its a virtually different rocket, much like the Superhornet  is related to the original F-18.

I did as suggested and learned a lot about the differing systems.  I appreciate the input...  Now I have to go to another BB and admit my mistake!
