I got the "long/short" bit but then you referred to another test as a fail because the missile impacted the target and left dents in it, which you described as being a fail - and all of the impacts I can find referred to as are listed as shots fired with a telemetry package on board to conserve the stocks of drones (not unusual as the US and every other country I can think of does much the same)

No warhead, no bang, simple.

Ian

When the warhead fusing functions properly, Stobie. I thought the short and long miss comments were OBVIOUS.

The Royal Navy had a really close look at the Aster/Sea Viper after the two test fails from Daring and gave it a clean bill of health after examining the whole thing in detail. They had access to a lot more data than you, I or Herald. They've a vested interest in making sure the thing works fine as the people doing the evaluations are of a generation where they remember the Falklands. We're still the only Navy to have fought a modern war against a near peer threat since WWII at sea, trust me, we're going to be picky about the weapon system for the T-45.

I'm perfectly open to some referenced, open source material demonstrating technical issues with Aster - as I say, I've no vested interest in Aster, it's a foreign built missile so it's not like there's a national interest at stake here.

Ian

...test conditions are undeclared

This in itself may indicate quite a lot.  "Shall achieve target negation" is slippery even by lawyer requirements standards.  A potential buyer surely ought to consider.  0.02

I wouldn't trust the MoD right now, Stobie, not after the actual cooked ASTER tests, the Canada Upholder submarine deal, the submarine Astute debacle, the mismanaged Typhoon program, METEOR as a program, NIMROD aircraft problems, British Army small arms, the defenseless Darings (not just the missing missiles), etc,

In other words, their claims that ASTER has a clean bill of health is about as credible as LockMart saying that the F-35 is on time or on budget.

That is a true kinetic non-explosive KILL and shows what a strike is supposed to do to a drone at those speeds. A graze is a FAIL no matter the missile tested.

Out of curiosity, why did the PAC3 "loop around" before it headed towards the target ?

That is a combination of semi-active radar homing and retransmission command guidance (Pioneered by the British  with their Bloodhound and Thunderbird missiles and Yellow and Indigo series radars as early as the 1950s).

At least he's not sick in the head like that Russki.  As God is my witness I don't know how to get through to that sort.
