Could someone explain the logic behind burst fire mortar. You have to zero on the target first, firing single shots. Or, perhaps, if the target is large enough, like air base, you don't care. What if you need to hit a single trench with soldier defending it.

Trench, To answer your question, the burst comes from the clip, and you're right, wouldnt be particularly useful for the first round, however article describes a weapon that can use both clip and traditionally loaded rounds, so 2-3 rounds conventionally loaded, to zero in, (if you cant zero in in 3 rounds you're not the best infantry man anyway) and then put a few clips through it, bang, you've got a dozen rounds on target in less than a minute. Thats some pretty devastating fire support. I was in infantry and can tell you i would not have liked to have been on the receiving end of that kind of fire. As to the article, several points, i know the Russians reported it was a mortar attack on their airbases, but i thought that was nonsensical propaganda? No rebel held areas within dozens of kilometers, and they later admited it was unsophisticated UAV's deploying home made mortar or grenade sized bombs? Also, several million dollars worth. Well, reports are floating around of 2 Su-35's, 4 su-24's and a transport plane destroyed. Thats closer to a quarter billion dollars, if the SU-35's are about 50 each, 20 for older 24's and a transport, something like that too. Not forgetting, Russia boasts all its planes cycling through Syria have gone through their appropriate modernisation cycles...

So it is a dual mode weapon. The drone attack on the air base was in the news. Are you suggesting it is the same event, or there might have been two separate drone attacks ? How do they manage to home those drones on target ? To hit a particular target (like parked aircraft) they need a camera in the nose of the drone, I guess. However, navigating several miles, or several dozens of miles, with camera might be difficult. Could those drones be navigated by means of civil GPS, like when cell phone tells you where you are.
