Agriculture is the mainstay of Pakistan's economy, employing more than 40% of the population. Cotton, wheat, rice, sugarcane, fruits, vegetables, and tobacco are the chief crops, and cattle, sheep, and poultry are raised. There is also a fishing industry. Most of Pakistan's agricultural output comes from the Indus basin. The country is now self-sufficient in food, as vast irrigation schemes have extended farming into arid areas, and fertilizers and new varieties of crops have increased yields.

Pakistan's industrial base is able to supply many of the country's needs in consumer goods and other products. The country major manufactures textiles (the biggest earner of foreign exchange), processed foods, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, paper products, and fertilizer. Remittances from Pakistanis working abroad constitute the second largest source of foreign exchange. Since the mid-1950s electric power output has greatly increased, mainly because of the development of hydroelectric power potential and the use of thermal power plants.
The chief trading partners are the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and China.

GDP growth, spurred by gains in the industrial and service sectors, remained in the 6-8% range in 2004-06. In 2005, the World Bank named Pakistan the top reformer in its region and in the top 10 reformers globally. [5]Islamabad has steadily raised development spending in recent years, including a 52% real increase in the budget allocation for development in FY07, a necessary step toward reversing the broad underdevelopment of its social sector

Economic resilience

Historically, Pakistan's overall economic output (GDP) has grown every year since a 1951 recession. Despite this record of sustained growth, Pakistan's economy had, until a few years ago, been characterized as unstable and highly vulnerable to external and internal shocks. However, the economy proved to be unexpectedly resilient in the face of multiple adverse events concentrated into an eight-year period —

According to many sources, the Pakistani government has made substantial economic reforms since 2000, and medium-term prospects for job creation and poverty reduction are the best in nearly a decade.

Government revenues have greatly improved in recent years, as a result of economic growth, tax reforms - with a broadening of the tax base, and more efficient tax collection as a result of self-assessment schemes and corruption controls in the Central Board of Revenue - and the privatization of public utilities and telecommunications. Pakistan is aggressively cutting tariffs and assisting exports by improving ports, roads, electricity supplies and irrigation projects. Islamabad has doubled development spending from about 2% of GDP in the 1990s to 4% in 2003, a necessary step towards reversing the broad underdevelopment of its social sector.

Liberalization in the international textile trade has already yielded benefits for Pakistan's exports, and the country also expects to profit from freer trade in agriculture. As a large country, Pakistan hopes to take advantage of significant economies of scale, and to replace China as the largest textile manufacturer as the latter China moves up the value-added chain. These industries play to Pakistan's relative strengths in low labor costs.

Growing stability in the nation's monetary policies has contributed to a reduction in money-market interest rates, and a great expansion in the quantity of credit, changing consumption and investment patterns in the nation. Pakistan's domestic natural gas production, and its significant use of CNG in automobiles, has cushioned the effect of the oil-price shock of 2004-2005. Pakistan is also moving away from the doctrine of import substitution which some developing countries (such as Iran) dogmatically pursued in the twentieth century. The Pakistani government is now pursuing an export-driven model of economic growth successfully implemented by South East Asia and now highly successful in China.

In 2005, the World Bank reported that

"Pakistan was the top reformer in the region and the number 10 reformer globally — making it easier to start a business, reducing the cost to register property, increasing penalties for violating corporate governance rules, and replacing a requirement to license every shipment with two-year duration licenses for traders."[11]

In addition, reduced tensions with India and the ongoing peace process raise new hopes for a prosperous and stable South Asia, with more intra-regional trade. However, due to global economic crisis in year 2007-2008 the economic progress has been adveresely affected and unemployment has increased.

i've read some of the arguments, and i still can't figure out why these topics always veer towards religion (islam in particular). being smart or creative is NOT (in my opinion) connected with what you happen to believe in. curiosity is a genetic thing that doesn't differentiate between religions...

also, why are you guys starting a war over this? i'm not a pacifist, but i feel that starting a war over who invented the number 0 is absurd and retarded.

What is the actual problem with India and pakistan?
=>Pakistan wants Kashmir because it has muslim majority and india wants it because of "Maharaja of Kashmir" aggreed to join india at that time.

My honest opinion...
As far as legality is concern i am with india [not because i am indian].
we have seen riots against minority in india and in pakistan [so no one is pak].
Technicaly, india has more power than pakistan but india not using it, and pakistan has little of it but they are showing they have more.
It's not all about Hinds and muslims, it's all about politics.
Many of Pakistani peoples are brain washed by Extremists, it also happens in india but at low level.
......
Respect all religion and think from your mind not from your heart...because some politicians are using your filling to rule us  and we all are following them like a fool....
we[indians and pakistanies] need to unite.

I think this fellow- pakiboy 12345 seems to be the most intelligent guy in the whole world. this guy has absolutely no knowledge regarding English language, and has written 'thought' in place of 'taught'. i can understand it because he is a PAKISTANI, a nation where a gun is given to the child before pen, a handbomb instead of football, and Jehad is taught instead of regular syllabus covering science and technology. Pakistan is better than India in technology ? Ha ha, this should be given the award for the best joke of decade.(you good for nothing pakis, go and see the international ranking regarding institutes, our IITs are in the top 50 whereas not a single institute from your nation is in top 500.) your rulers have killed democracy long back, and most of them get assassinated as soon as they step down from presidentship. World knows Pakistan has always started a war and India has ended it with a new glory each time.
