Could somebody tell me why it's a big deal?

What is the big deal?
(a) The fact that it offended some people?
(b) The fact that it developed into a legal case?
(c) The media has kindled a forest fire from stray sparks?

Well...

(a) India is a big country with all combinations and permutations of people: where in rest of the world prudish people are few and far between, in India due to population density and whatnot they are still few but better concentrated.

(b) Blame the Victorian Era law.

(c) Whats the big deal about media making a big deal of a peculiar occurance?

Because it was a white guy.

You mean, Western media also picked it up because it was a white guy? Yes, thats possibly true.

But in India its business as usual!!! I remember some B-grade actress doing something like that with Jackie Chan in France some months ago -- same reaction, smaller scale because its out of jurisdiction and the actress less famous than Shilpa Shetty. Any Indian actor caught smooching on screen will be in just as much trouble, if not more! There was an interview with a famous Indian actor who said it was less risky to play a "good Paki" role and get booed by the audience than to kiss on screen, have the movie ostracized and not having an audience
