got a call from a customer who turned out to be ex US military. he ran across one of my products in south baghdad and was so impressed he noted our name and contact information at the time. when the company he worked for needed a similar product he called us up. i'd no idea any of my stuff was actually in iraq.

My company makes portable forklift ramps for unloading trucks and building access. we also do some custom dimension ramps more for the military than civilian use. if you want to go have a look at the kinds of things we do our website is forkliftramp.com i knew we had some ramps in abu dhabi but they were for an arab shipping company. i hadn't realized that any of our stuff had been sent off to iraq.

yeah assuming that dealing with the military doesn't give me a terminal ulcer. some tech sgt will phone up with his problem and everything is fine then i get a call from some officer who obsesses about the paint or something silly like that. another deal i have been working on hehe was a whacking huge ramp for loading helos onto something called a k-liner to load it onto a C5. every few months they transfer the guy i am talking to and it's back to square one pretty much. the last poor guy they transferred to iraq and never replaced him at all so i have no idea if they want the thing or not now. by the time they get around to actually ordering the thing it's gonna wind up costing them a LOT more money than if they had just gone ahead in early 2004 and ordered it.

The military asks about the strangest things. they once called up and asked me if i could build them a ramp that broke down into pieces no more than 150 lb i think it was. while i could have done so it would have been ridiculously expensive and time consuming to put together. what i was boggled about was that if you need a forklift ramp you have a forklift in which case why does it need to break down into such tiny parts. asked about it and then never heard from them again hehe.

the closest i was ever able to come to a workable explanation for that request was there was a reg about pack horses carrying 150 lb's on each side. who knows what lurks in the bowels of the pentagon eh.
